They have been removed many times over.

You'll need to remove the trim on the bottom of the hatch inside. It's been a while since I removed mine (and just as long since I put it back), but I'm 99% certain that the trim piece snaps off (as in, there are no bolts to remove prior to prying). Start at the edges along the sides of the hatch and gently, but firmly, pry the trim away from the hatch. You will be able to tell where the clips are. They just snap out. Some are harder than others, and there are special tools which make this easier to do, but I have never used them.

Once you get the trim down, you will be able to see where the 3rd brake light is connected to the wiring harness and can disconnect that. Afterwards, it's a question of using common sense and removing the bolts which hold the wing in place. You might also remove the wiper assy, but it's not required.

Short term (and less than ideal) solution to the remaining holes, is to get some plastic plugs from a hobby shop or hardware store. Ideal solution (permanent) is to have the holes welded over and get the hatch repainted. Your call.

Dude, Keep it on, thats the one of the most sexiest parts of the car.
(oh well its up to you, plus people pay mad cash for it when you sell it)
But diggs aka the dr. (can I call you that?) set you straight!
