Ok, for some time now, MONTHS. When ever I ride in my car and my brother accelerates there is this squeaking er squealing sound. Any idea's what it could be? You can hear it outside too. I just want to get it fixed before something breaks. My dad keeps telling me it's just a belt. Any ideas??

Check the harmonic balancer.

I had a ticking sound and sometimes squealing this is exactly what it was.

The harmonic balancer is the crankpulley. All the accessories run off of it. I got mine from mitsu and it cost me $129.00. Took about an hour to replace because the accessory belts are not the easiest to get off. I am also very lazy so I took my time.

Hope this helps.:)

YES! :thumb: what he said. definately check on that harmonic balancer, mine was doing the same not but a week ago and i pulled the pulley off, and it just fell into 2 pieces. check it before it costs you more money

How long would it take, because I doubt me and my dad could take the pully off and replace it without screwing something up. I'd probably have to get it done. And if it costs alot it will probably have to wait till I do the T-belt. Being poor sucks..

mmm well not sure bout the diff with 1g and 2g on this but with mine i just took off my drivers side wheel. then there was a splash gaurd to take off(2 screws) then take all of your belts off( very easy if you dont know how to do it i'm sure your dad does) then you should be able to see the crank pulley. its held on by 4 bolts i believe..take those off and it will come off. if its worn out like mine it should seperate fairly easily or have some play in it(if its messed up you will know) then if its not broken, keep lookin. if it is run by the mitsu dealer n pick it up, problem solved.

btw i believe it took me about an hour to take off the old one and replace it. no biggie and its great to have that awful noise go away :thumb:

To take off the balancer on a 1g there is only one bolt, right in the middle of the pulley. Taking it off can be a bit of B--CH though when you try to turn it the motor wants to turn over with it. So, it is something you can do on your own but the trick is to stop the engine from turning over in the process.

I would suggest getting a Chiltons or a Haynes manual on the car for added assistance though. Ideal would be a shop manual but they can be a bit pricey.. They don't cover everything but are very helpfull at times. You can get them online or at any parts store.

Hope this helps
