so yesterday i bought some Header wrap and wrapped it around my header one layer thick with no gaps and clamped it in place. ever since then, even on short trips when i open the hood there is a fair amount of smoke comming off from my header. is this normal, like breaking the wrap in?

Did you get anything on the header? Grease, oil, wd40, oil from your hands? That would also cause it to smoke.

I always hated installed wrap right after doing something big, as I never knew if it was the wrap or something else going on. When you spray it, it tends to smoke even more. Nasty smell... up there with nail polish remover

I love that smell :D

Anyhow, just a note of caution. Yes, heat wrap does smoke when installed. I also spray it with a high heat paint to help it constrict onto the pipe.

BUT, be careful that you are not using a cheap (or too low a heat threshold) wrap. I bought the less expensive heat wrap from Summit one time and went down the road. It started to smoke so much that I had to pull over to see if there was something else going on. There was. My header wrap had literally caught on fire! (No, no flames. But basically glowing orange burn - like coals in a fire - as it worked it way through my exhaust). I ended up ripping it out right there and then (all asses and elbows like. Got a little crowd going to see where the fire was, LOL). Kinda scary that my car could have burnt down.

Fortunately, I got it all off and Summit took care of me (of course) with some upgraded wrap and I was on my way.

yea i bought some really nice stuff... and the price reflects that LOL, but its since stopped smoking. unfortunately tho, my underhood temps still tend to get too hot for my liking, after driving through town and then coming to an idle, my heat gauge still rises above halfway mark to make me feel uncomfortable. :ohdamn: It goes back down once i start driving and running air through it tho. I'm going to make my own custom heat shield tomorrow so hopefully that will help.
