size exhaust

Stay with 2.5 if you are going to stay with a small turbo. It will make it much easier to not get pulled over for having a overly loud exhaust.

Plus you don't magically make more exhaust gases just because you have a larger exhaust so you won't see any gain by going bigger than you need to be.

Another thing that I have NEVER seen mentioned on here is how exhausts work especially at the muffler. They work by basically forcing sound waves to bounce back and hit another wave as it is coming (not all but it is the general idea), thus it eliminates the sound. With out the right size exhaust you will have a horrible sound, most wouldn't ever notice but most don't really listen either. You could also have an extremely loud exhaust because you aren't neutralizing the sound waves before they leave the exhaust.

A perfect example is straight pipes, they are loud as hell because the waves are almost not even remotely touched and eliminated before leaving the pipe.

Hmmm, good info. My exhaust is loud & very raspy. BUT I drive a GST. It has some curves compared to the straight back GSX exhaust correct? Is there going to be a noticable difference between the two exhaust on a similar setup? I ask because I would like to quiet down my exhaust. Do I just need a better muffler?

Mufflers and resonators help mellow out the sound. Different length resonators work at different frequencies and rpm.

Resonators work by having the sound bounce around and cancel itself out. Mufflers have a sound deadening material in them that absorbs the energy of the sound waves.

All this talk about the size and the diameter of the pipe has almost nothing to do with the sound or loudness of the exhaust. The main deciding factor in the sound or loudness of an exhaust is going to be the muffler. If you want a quieter exhaust you will need to try a quieter muffler and/or add in another muffler or resonator somewhere.;)
