Obviously AdrenlineCrash's car isn't that fast by running a 17.4 quarter and unless he picks up one hell of a job till school starts, he isn't going to buying a s2000 anytime soon. Lets be real. I say go for the 1g/2g turbos. As I look in autotrader right now, the average for a 2g gst is about 4-7k and the average 2g is about 2-3k. All with considerable mileage.

Starting with a car that already has a turbo is a huge head start.

isnt he on a budgtet here......sn S200 is far from reasonable....look for a mid 90s miato or even a corolla sr5....both good choices for lights RWD platforms

if he has no money how cna he afford to fix a DSM when it breaks.......if a turbo takes a shit thats alot ofmoney to havbe to pull outta your ass...mine would stil be broke if it werent for the extended warranty

If I was FORCED to buy a car like a miata, I'd rather go for the MR2 Spyder. You know what? Screw it, just save another 5k and get a 1998 Porsche Boxster for 19k if you want a roadster.

As far as STOCK 4-bangers go Miatas are great. Its a great platform to start with. Its fast, agile, and looks good. It can outhandle most cars on the road in America today.

Also I dont understand your preocupation with S2000s. I mean sure they look good, theyre pretty quick, and they handle OK but Id take a Miata over that any day. Theyre about 10k cheaper, respond well to mods, handle like a dream, and are quick for a STOCK 4-banger.

who cares if a car is "quick" for a stock 4 banger. 99% of stock 4 bangers are slow. If you want a car that's quick stock get a domestic v8. If you want a 4 banger you need something with FI... like a turbo dsm. Get an awd 1g or 2g and you'll be happy. Don't mess with front wheel drive and don't mess with NA. You had an NA eclipse ... that says it all.

Funny you suggest a domestic V8, then you suggest an awd DSM that can't even keep up with a RWD to top end with similar investment. Mod for mod an AWD can't hang with a FWD from 0 to top, let alone a RWD. Yeah he'll be happy...if his idea of fun is only a 1/4 mile. :thumbdown Definately not if he dislikes seeing V8 taillights on the highway.

There is only one AWD I'd buy, and it's a skyline GTR because its AWD only engages on traction loss and the rest of the time it's RWD.

Around corners an Evolution Lancer would tear it appart... In the 1/4 the same will happen... The Skyline is only good for one thing... Highways :p we choose what we like racing but please don't discredit other cars. And though you are not doing it intensionally there are many cars better than a Skyline. 3kGT VR4 ;)

I see GTRs every day. They crush Evos...and the Evo VIII in the US is simply a neutered Evo VII in Japan. The ones in Japan are factory rated 280 bhp, the national legal limit, yet push 300 on the dyno. Even these don't stand a chance, let alone an American pissant Evo.

Where do you see them crush evo's at? There was the true question. On the highway? In a strait away or on the Autocross? I guarantee you that the best Evo and the best Skyline in autocross the Best Evo has destroyed the best Skyline there, Course records prove so... The fact that the Evo holds records in autocross and the Skylines do not is enough proof that it handles much better. And even if you go to other Skyline forums they will admit to it. You are blind or am I? I will admit that the Skyline is a formitable car especially on highways but nowhere near in comparison to handling in corners. And if you build up a car for 1/4 comparitively Skylines suffer from the same problem as a Supra.

Oh yes and HP doesnt always = better

And also incase no one has had a reality check seeing as someone mentioned 0 to top end, THATS NOT LEGAL DIP SHIT! And I sware if some dumb ass ricer ###got who thinks he is all that hit and seriously injures or kills someone I love because there doing 140+ on the highway and live, you can bet it wont be for long because i'll be in jail soon for murrder.

I know we all race on the streets from time to time, but that is NOT the place to be topping out your car!

In the end all tuners who dont have there head in there ass's knows at the end of the day the V8's and RWD cars will always be better, period. It just so happens most of the turbo AWD 4cyl cars out now in general can out do a RWD car when compaired on many points. But if both cars are setup for any one thing, you can bet RWD will always be the best choice. <--- and dont try saying AWD Lauch's harder, it does in STREET fourm, but toss some slicks and setup the suspentions on both cars on a high HP RWD car vs equal hp AWD car, with equaly skill drivers and the RWD will win every time.


Sorry for my rant, it just seems to many people think AWD is the god of drivetrains.
 
Ah, the wisdom of one who's experience with skylines is limited to reading about them. Evos are good for one thing: a sandbox. That's the only element where they belong. If you aren't going to rally race them, then you've no business with one.

The GTR is probably the greatest sports car ever built, specifically the R32 to R34. From skylinegtr.comL

It is the most dominant race car in world racing history. Even though its only talking about Rally. It holds more championships than any of the same car in World Champinionship competition. OWNED now shut up.

I think Miata's are nice. As a matter of fact, that's what I’m most likely going to get when (if) I can sell my Talon. Or a 92-93 Accord EX coupe and do the H22a swap. Let's face it, most DSM's are lemons of one kind or another. Most have been beat to death. The only way your going to get 'Bang-for-Buck" with a DSM is if you find an extremely clean, stock, low-mileage, adult owned car. Well, that goes for most performance cars in general. Back to the Miata. If you look, you can find a 94+ with 60-80K on it for around $4,000. That's from an adult who most likely has not beaten it like people on these boards would. So you start with a pretty fresh car. A set of lightweight Rota's (16's or 17's) with some sticky rubber. Some decent adjustable dampers (Bilstein/Konis) and lowering springs with a roll bar and strut bars will increase the handling immensely. With a hard top they look quite smooth. So what are we at, $6,000 for a car that's RWD, 50/50 weight distribution, and a curb weight of 2200lbs that handles better than almost anything. But now the power. A 1994+ with the 1.8 DOHC w/full intake and exhaust will pull what? Mid-low 15's with 105-110whp. But of course they can handle a fair amount of boost with the proper engine management. The "kits" are kind of expensive except the Greddy ($900), but its not even intercooled. The decent "kits" are $2700-$5000. But being DSMers, we know a better kit can be built for a reasonable amount of money. Turbocharger, manifold, intercooler, BOV, oil/water lines, IC piping and exhaust are the basic components of any system. If you can fab your own IC pipes and SS exhaust you’ve already saved a bunch. From what I've read the Miata fuel rail is low volume and you'll need some 440cc+ injectors and a pump. I haven't read enough on the engine management but there is plenty of turbo Miata's so it couldn't be that bad. But you get the picture. A stock 3,100 lb. AWD DSM puts down what....165whp if it’s lucky. 200+whp in a RWD 2200lb go-kart is just sick. Hell, even 165whp would be great.

I was going to get a miata, but then I saw Corky Romano. If you can get past that hideous imagery, then I say go for the miata.
