Short shifter for an AUTO transmission?

I have only found one thread on it and it didnt have any information on it except for people flaming the guy who posted it.

Basically, I just want to shorten the shifter on my auto trans because I hate how tall it is. I dont see the point of it being so tall and if it was shorter it wouldnt interfere with viewing a double-din dvd/gps when youre in Park.



And just to avoid the countless posts the last guy got when he asked this simple question...

No I am not trying to 'shift from park to drive faster'.

And because the shifter is hardly ever used except for switching between park/reverse/drive thats even MORE reason to not have it so awkwardly tall and in the way of things like a stereo that you use more frequently.


This is purely about the aesthetics and overall functionality of the interior design of the car.
NOTHING to do with performance gains.

So now that weve gotten through that part, does anyone know of anything like this? Or is my only option some sort of custom fabricated part?

yeah, you are kinda stuck with that big bannana.

i thought they are REALLY tall too.

you would need to gran a junkyard one, tear it apart, see what you need to shorten, and get another one and actually do it. never heard of someone doing it though.

ill get a pic of my setup its not cut or anything just put an aftermarket shifter on and it looks alot better. ill get pics as soon as i get home. here is the pics of my shifter just moved the over drive switch to near the gauge cluster

You can relocate the OD button and disable the shift lock button and cut it down a bit. You can also get an aftermarket (manual) shift knob and boot and make it look like a manual. I had a friend do this in his avenger.

It does look 100x better with the manual shift knob mod, a friend of mine had one in his auto before he sold it.

save yourself the trouble and tear it apart to get the understanding of how it works, from that point i would hit up a junk yard and look for a shorter one that would work..... but with the high doubt that would work it would be time to pull out the tool box and start fabbing something up that could work..GL

Ive found some things like this:

Youd think if they make just some generic plain ones that somewhere theyd sell a bunch of diff. options and perhaps even some with OD buttons built in.

dsms are hard to come by at the junk yards around here or id try to find one i could tear apart

i saw a few on ebay awhile back with an overdrive button built in and it looked worse than the stock one i went with the one you found it was a simple install. and you can mount the overdrive button anywhere you will have to cut the overdrive button wires to get it out. here is a link to the manual shifter handle install http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...r/253479-replacing-t-shifter-manual-knob.html
