Shift Linkage Pin?

My shift linkage keeps coming out of that bracket that holds it in, resulting in my car getting stuck in whatever gear it was in currently until the "pin" falls out. Last time this happened, it fell onto the tranny, but this time, I can't find it. What is the name of that pin that holds the shift linkage in that bracket called? Or, is there something else I can do or "rig" to keep it in the bracket without the pin? Thanks..autostores are going to be closing soon so any help is appreciated.

Are you talking about the cotter pin?

You can use a paper clip or a wire or something to keep it in there until you get some cotter pins from a auto parts store.

No, it looks like a C-Clip kind of thing. A two pronged metal piece that goes over the shift linkage.

Look in the "Help" isle at Autozone and you should be able to find something there.

He is talking underneath the hood. There are quite a few of these throughout the linkages. I've also had the same problem.

I went under the hood and took a pic of where he probably lost it.

What I did for this was make sure the clip is even and not bent where the forks on it are. I set it in place and lined it up and pushed it in as far as i could by hand and then took a larger flathead and lightly hammered it farther down and into place. I have not had a problem since.

As for the piece itself you could probably make your own out of some scrap fairly easily.

Well heres the problem..I did check the "help" section at Autozone and NAPA, as well as AAP. None of them had what I was looking for. I WOULD use that one I took a picture of in my car, but it isn't mine. I don't actually have my own because it fell out on the road somewhere. I need to know where to get one. As for making my own..I did order some C-Clips from AAP that he said may work.

Tried using a C-Clip and filing it a bit so it fits...not too sure if it will hold too well. Don't want my car getting stuck in third gear on some random hill in the middle of nowhere haha.

Reviving this because I'm having an issue of one of mine backing itsself out. It popped out once completely when I first got the car (probably due to my poor ability to shift) and it took me like half an hour to figure out what it was, out it in, but I have to go in everyday and push it back down. I think its also causing some other issues with it not being settled correctly. I'd just like to get a new one if possible and a part number would be fantastic. Thanks!

Anyone know where I can get one in a store? Or something similar till I wait forever for one to come in the mail? I actually lost mine this morning had to first gear it all the way home.

You can use a C clip and itll work just fine. Ive had one on my tranny for over 2500 miles and it hasnt caused a problem. you can find them at a rural king, or if you dont have one any hardware store/tractor supply store has every size c clip you can imagine.

You can use one from any 4g6# 1.8L-2.4L colt/summit, galant, 1g, 2g, hyundai etc.. Your nearest wrecking yard will have a few of those.

I dont have a caliper to measure and its been since july since i bought it. Just put a caliper on the part of the linkage, or even a ruler for a rough measurement, and go grab every size that its close to. Youll quickly find out which will work and which wont. Just return the others, thats what i did.

They are cheap at extremepsi or STM though so im personally ordering a couple today just for peace of mind. Dont get me wrong, the c clip works but ya know, its just not as "pretty" .
