I'll start with some background info. I have a 1990 Laser RS Turbo. This is my first experience working with these cars. I bought the car after it had been sitting for who knows how long. The engine and transmission were out of it. I rebuilt the engine and installed a new clutch kit. It has new spark plugs, wires, air filter, and vacuum lines.

I started the car today and it doesn't idle well at all. It seems to be missing a lot. When I give it some gas off idle it almost dies then revs up. I don't know how well it drives since that leads to my other problem. It doesn't want to go into reverse. Everywhere I put the shifter, it wants to go forward. When I leave it in neutral it is very hard to push, takes two people and we still can barely move it. It takes quite a bit of pressure to move the shifter side to side.

Also the check engine light comes on sometimes. Is there another way to get the codes without using an analog voltmeter like it describes in the Haynes manual? I know on some cars I could jumper a wire in the diagnostic connector and count the CEL flashes. I have a code scanner, but it's only for OBD II.

Any ideas?

I tested the IAC motor how it said in the Hayne's manual. Everything checked out fine, although I didn't remove it and clean it. It looks like a bi*** to get at. I wasn't able to test the TPS, but I did swap it with another TPS I have with no change. I'm working on getting a logger. I built the cable today, then remembered why I haven't been using my PDA, it's broke. Does anyone know if the passive logger cable will work with a Sony Clie? I'm bringing my PDA in to Best Buy to get fixed as I have a service plan on it, but maybe I should just exchange it for a PDA I know will work with my logger cable.

Ok i fixed the engine problem. The throttle body gasket had an air leak. Now if I could get this thing to go into reverse. I'm assuming there's some bushings I need to grease up just haven't got around to taking a look.
