So I'm considering the daunting task of redoing the interior of my 2g. I've heard that krylon fuzion works well on the plastics/vinyl but I've also heard that the SEM dyes work well. I'm looking for something subtle, a light grey on the major panels, grey leather seats with a dark green (willow or hunter) for inserts, dark green leather on the door panel inserts, and maybe a few black touches here or there. Not looking for anything that looks like it has been painted or anything super high gloss. Basically I want to refine the interior and add a tasteful touch of "luxury" for lack of a better word. I've seen a lot of interiors done here and thought I'd turn to you folks for advice. SEM or Krylon for that subtle touch? or do you know of something even better? perhaps a run on dye rather than a spray? let me know what you think.

fusion sucks IMHO, it wore out within weeks. If you ARE going to use it, use primer. The claim that you don't need to primer it is BS, it doesn't stick that well.

For interior PLASTIC coloring I recommend Color Place Spray Paint from Wal-Mart, its cheap and very effective....once again make sure you use plenty of primer to make it stick well and follow up with about 3 coats of clearcoat to help prevent nicks.

I personally don't recommend dying the seats..but thats just my opinion.

Krylon Fusion all the way. I just took the plastic peices off, cleaned them to removed oils, sprayed on a adhesion promoter, then gave it a few nice coats of Fusion and let it dry. Looks great, no need for clearcoats. I have had mine in for months now and nothing has chipped, scratched, faded, or anything. So I highly recommend Krylon Fusion for plastics.

i've used the krylon fusion on sone plastic interior pieces and i was happy with the results...

I've had duplicolor in my car for almost a yer now. I have absolutely no chips or fading. I didnt even prime. I just sanded to scuff it up, and sprayed about 4 layers of dupli-color paint and 2-3 leayers of clearcoat. It has a nice glossy finish and hold up well.

On some more recent peices i did, I sanded and primed, and added clearcoat. These peices are very glossy, and tere are no chips, even after bounching around my garage for a month.

I am probably the only person on here who used dupli-color, most people use Krylon.. i just like the dupli-color better.

I used Vinyl dye from pep boys (can't remember brand)... 2 years, going strong. No cracks, I can even try to scratch it with my finger nails, and it'll flex with the vinyl... Of course if I did it really really strong, it'll come off, but it's strong beyond belief for a spray.

i used fusion on one of my dashs, with primer and that was last year and the car sat outside all summer and winter, and again this summer and it still looks like it did the day i painted it, its good stuff

I actually just got done painting my interior. Most of its not even back in yet but I used the fusion and it kicks total ass. I made sure to clean off all the oils and spray many coats. I also made sure i let it set for about 3 days to cure. They put a week on the can, which if I didn't want to drive my baby so bad I'd gave it the week. But I give it 5 :dsm: :dsm: :dsm: :dsm: :dsm: ! GOOD SHIZAT!

I've had Krylon fusion on my dash (the vynal stuff) for about 10 months now. It survived a harsh winter and is still holing strong, much better than the other types of spray i tried when doing the interior.

Hey, nice work!!!

Fusion works great on the plastic, but not so great on the vinyl, at least for me. Keeps coming out sticky. Of course it is 100+ degrees out here... I'm going to try the SEM on the vinyl next.

I want to paint some of my interior as well. I plan to use Krylon Fusion, but wanted to know if you guys are like wetsanding the pieces after your spray them or just prepping the plastic, spraying fusion and then putting them back on?

Thanks

You can do that if you want to keep the stock grain. If you want it to be smooth then you have to use filler primer to fill in the grain.

Did you guys take the dash out to spray it?

I took mine out. I think even though it was a PITA to remove it was easier to paint.

Wouldn't it be easier to remove the windshield than the dash? I know it cost 100 bucks to have a new wind shield installed, that is with the glass. Just pay the guy to take your old one out, and reinstall it when your done.
