Algonquin,
i'm planning on building a box for my spyder for 1 JL 12" sub. should i build a ported or sealed one, whats the difference.

and also how much volume would a JL Wo 12" sub need.

good site, thanks

how do i figure out the volume? whats the formula..
on that site they had the dimensions 20x13x14.25 which equaled 1.5 cu ft. how?

i thought it was just L x W x H??

those numbers must have been for some thing different. I got some thing like 2.1435 some thin some thi some thin

Just remember to convert the inches to feet first. Such as 20 inches divided by 12 (the leangth of one foot) would be 1.666- linear feet. Do the rest to all the numbers

(20 inches) 1.666
(13 inches)1.083
14.5 inches) 1.187

multiply and you get 2.14 some thin.

yea thats what i was getting too. i guess that number is for something else. thanks though

To be honest wit hyou, just go sealed. Sealed will produce more than enoughtight bass. trust me, i have goen through box after box for competition systems. And the only difference porting makes, is if you can frequency test teh car, the build a box with ports tuned to that frequency and install it in the right place. Finding the surface area of the port, the depth, and size of the hole, and the shape of the hole, all matter in the quality of the bass. If you are confused at all please do yourself a favor and just build a sealed box. you wont regret it. PLEASE pm me with more questions and i can clarify things for you.
good luck

MTX Thunderform custom enclosures are optimized both for space conservation, and optimal volume for sound; they are also unported (or at least the one i had in my camaro was). Sealed is the way to go IMO

me personally find the ported subs to be more listenable. My ears are very sensitive to distortion, and at high volumes most sealed systems tend to hurt my ears. A ported system seems to be much smoother IMO. Try picking up a prefab one from jl, or ebay if you have to scrounge.

well i'm gonna try to build one for my spyder. either in the space where the tops folds down or take out the backrest for the back seat and put it there... i'll still have back seat which i use as storage.

i'll go w/ sealed seems a lot easier. thanks guys.

Best thing you can is call up Ron at JL and talk to him. He helped me out with a box design for my car, he can tell you whats best for what u want, :thumb: those JL guys really know their stuff. Also, what 12 do you have?
