Its based off of smog shop not mechanic, as for mechanic, I go to the albee shop, also known as banishedmunk's garage

Should know that you need to take it to a smog shop, not even sure when the last time a mechanic could do a smog

Knows the smog is done at shops that work on cars, unless you are told by the DMV to go to the "Smog Only" shop. They take cars older than about eight to ten years old and randomly pick them for this test. I have had two cars go through the test, it's not a big deal if you are running stock and your basic maintenance is good. The test is basically the same, but the shop doesn't work on cars, just tests them.
