running very rich

ok i have a 1995 eagle talon awd tht has a fmic full exhaust intake k&n filter. When I`m just crusing down the road all you can smell in the cars cabin is gas and were my exhaust comes out its all black. Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on?

Do you have black soot on your back bumper by the muffler?
If you do run your finger over it and if it's light and like a fine dust it's gas, and you're running rich.
If it smears on your bumper, it's oil.

If you are running rich, while cruising, which should be in closed loop, maybe you have a faulty O2 sensor? Or do you have larger injectors, and maybe not tuned for that?

i justhad my brother check because im not home. and it did smear so it would be oil? and i do have an oil leak that looks like its coming out of a stud on my head,the one bolt on my exhost that doesn have a nut. What would this mean? Also could it mean i have two problems because i can still smell the exhaust in the cabin.

Sounds like you have a few exhaust leaks, so you need to fix those. I'd say new gaskets and studs/nuts might be in order. Can you pinpoint the oil leak?

ok, thanks and yeah i can pin point it to the spot were theres not a nut on one of the bolts so im going to try to get that fixed and see how everything works then. Thanks for your advice.

you could very well be burning oil, if it's not oil that you are smelling and you're running rich, if you have stock injectors, i would check your o2 sensors that may be going bad

Definitely an exhaust leak. I'd look to see if the studs/nuts are secure, and exhaust is in good shape, cracks in the exhaust manifold.

Sounds like a possible bad o2 sensor running lean more than likely it's downstream.

ok ill check that thanks and i just found out my maf iss a little messed up with some bent honeycombs would that have anything to do with this?

if the honeycombs in the MAF sensor are bent and messed up don't try to fix that, you're going to have to get a new one or at least one from a salvage yard b/c that can definately cause you to run lean or rich because it's sending bad air readings

Ok. I'm going to buy a new maf and also one of my bolts going to the head is stripped. Would it be possible to just use thread locker on it or would i have to re-tap that hole?

There are several ways to fix that stopped problem. One yould would need to re-tap the hole and get another bolt. Or two. You can buy a helix coil kit, it's like a spring that compresses and expands in the hole causing the bolt to take. I would tap i have never had any luck with retarded a$$ helix coils. But then again I just might be an idiot who can't work them right.
