Almost ready to run my new ebay dp and no cat. Can I leave my o2 sensor in and just remove my CEL everytime it comes on?

Or is it best to remove it, plug the hole and rap the sensor in foil?

Would think about doing the fix explained in vfaq but I want to leave the wires alone.

i have a custom built 3 inch with no cat. i zip tied the rear o2 sensor under the car. no CEL yet and it has been a few monthes. i figure if i ever get a CEL i'll just install an o2 simulator. dont put the sensor in the exaust with no cat... you will have a annoying CEL.

I did the same thing, wrapped the sensor up and zip-tied it up out of the way. No cel.. as of yet anyhow. DSM's are strange creatures tho, what works for one man may not always work for the other.

before i had my exaust done i did a lot of research on this. with a few searches i read that as long the sensor reads oxygen, it will not not throw a CEL. So if it outside the car.. no CEL, the only problem is a rock or something taking it out. try a search maybe that will help you. good luck

the only problem with having the light on is it that if there is another problem, he won't know. if that doesn't bother you... leave it in.

Exactly
The CEL can come on for a reason other than the o2 an he wont know it. Unless of course he wants to check codes once every day or two.. which would be a pain.

I wrapped mine in foil but replaced it in the exhaust. So far no CEL, about 1,000 miles on it. We'll see if it holds up.

Well if it lasts that long I might just do that.

Im ok with the light coming on once a month, but yeah every other day would be a pain.

If you do it this way, use several layers of foil then wrap a piece of small guage wire around it near the base of the sensor and tighten it down (twist the ends like you would a twist tie). This will help keep the edges of the foil from lifting or coming off.

The foil will degrade (becomes flaky and brittle) in the exhaust heat over time but in a friend's experience only needs to be redone once a year or so.

^^Agreed. Or you could use a small metal hose clamp to hold the tin foil in place instead.

Yeah, I tried that but it won't fit throught the bung.:) The diameter of the threaded portion of the sensor is only slightly more than the sensor body itself. Even with the wire I had to take the twisted end and push it flush against the sensor as much as possible to get it past the bung.:thumb:

I hope that makes sense.
