Hey guys/gals I am new to the eclipse and imports I am mainly associated with small block chevys and such. But i have a offer to trade for a 98 eclipse rs has 137,000 miles all stock. The guy who has it tells me it needs rod bearings, My experiance with small blocks is that if it needs rod bearings then it needs alot more as well, just wondering if this is common and how hard of a job is it to perform. Also where is best place for these bearings. Thanks alot Adam

I don't know what you are trading him but I hope it is not much. That sounds like alot work for a car with alot of miles.

Chances are if it needs a rod bearing it needs the block to be tanked and cleaned to remove all the bearing pieces. The crank will need to be replaced or at least turned and polished.

I use clevite 77 bearings but I have the 4G63 not the 420a. You should be able to find these at any reputable shop. I like extremepsi.com. They have always been good to me.

If its that bad go ahead and scrap the motor and get a new one. 420A motors are really not that hard to find. I got one for 350.00 from the salvage yard...

To do it the right way the crank must be miked to see how far it is out of spec..The 420a is really not that hard, nothing like the chevy motors. You can find the bearings here
Rod Bearings - CI Motorsports. You can find alot of the parts you need at CI motorsports..
95-99 Eclipse Non Turbo 420a - CI Motorsports

I really appreciate the help, I wont have alot in the car, the car does run, and doesnt start making noise till it gets warm. I know the proper thing is to do a total rebuild, Just wondering if any one else has had same issue, and tried to replace only bearings.

i never had the same issue yet(knock on wood) but if your doing a rebuild did you ever think about putting on a turbo? you can really push these little 4 bangers to some pretty high horses dont get me wrong i still like the older V8s myself back when you didnt have to tune and mess with all this computer shit. Back when you could build a motor that ran as good as it sounded.

I was just thinking about it (turbo). The car is rs 98 model I havent picked it up yet, but going today to get it. Should I just rebuild or buy a salvage yard motor? Also what can I look for that already has turbo set up? I guess what Iam asking what is the most cost effective, and cheapest route and still be able to have a little fun

Where can I find a complete engine (used) for this 98 n/t

Replacing the rod bearings shouldn't be that hard, just pull the oil pan off and take a look. I have had the 420A and a 4g63, I haven't replaced the bearings on the 420A but have on the 4g63 and it was easy. The hardest part was getting the oil pan off. Any auto parts store will have the bearings, if your just running a stock motor almost any OE bearing will do the job and they are inexpensive. I see alot of people running the ACL race bearings, but for a stock setup that you are unsure of what the problem is I would just use some cheap ones.

How much are you getting this car for?

I am going to try to resale it, It is in good shape other than motor, I have less than 500 in it

Less than 500 aint too bad hell on craigslist where i live you can buy a running driving 2g non turbo for 600 -1200 there on there all the time they sell them cheap cause they dont hold that great of value
