[RESOLVED] oil pan

what do i need to do to break the seal on the oil pan? it won't budge... would knocking a putty knife in there work?

No dont do that. Just keep hitting the sides of it. Dont go off on it.Only as much force as you need.Or you can try getting a block of wood in there for leverage, and pry on it a little.

Must be very careful with doing that . Try a rubber mallet .

Rubber Mallett ...... Gently , delicately along the sides . Do not hit hard enough to dent .

Whatever you can, just don't damage the oil pan, I have found anything from hammering a screw driver and prying on it, but being very careful, to just hitting the actual oil pan with a rubber mallet works.

A putty knife or something firm and thin should work. Just be careful to not cause gouges on either surface...if you do make sure to sand the surfaces back to smooth for the new gasket. A soft impact hammer at certain angles can also help break it loose.

You don't want to force anything with the oil pan, or else you'll put some gouges in the mating surface. If it won't budge, then using a putty knife might work, but don't knock it in there with anything. Just push it in the side as flat as possible while applying pressure back and forth on the oil pan.

Just keep rocking the pan back and forth and it should pry loose. Also, try starting on one side and work toward the corner. Then try the other side and work toward the corner. If you need to use more force, get a couple wedges of wood and tap it between the block and pan slowly. With a couple wedges in, it should provide leverage to pop it off.

Just keep at it, it will come off eventually. Have you tried PB blaster or anything to chew up the seal?
If you can find something that will work, you can use the holes for the pan bolts and leverage it side to side to break it free(requires some thought).

I have always used a pry bar between the pan and block if I couldn't get it off by hand. I have not had a problem with any of them and have done many.

I got it, i used the puTTy knife and a hammer, no gouges or anything. Now the block is going to be off to the machine shop tomorrow.
