About 3 weeks ago I purchased a evo3 16g turbo lightly used from gsxstac here at the forums. Having waiting an enormous amount of time, it finally came yesterday. Much to my suprise, it's got a broken bolt in it (he failed to mention that!)!

So anyway, my question is, how in the world would I remove this bolt? What kind of shop would I have to take it to?

Attached is a picture.

Drill into it with new, sharp bit and try some extractors. Soak it in penetrating oil prior to removal. Get the biggest extractor you can in there and start to torque it out. If you think th might break, stop.
In this case, I'd drill the thing out, use gradually larger and larger bits until you can pick the threads out.

Well the seller appears to be ignoring the issue that he sold me a "ready to be bolt on turbo" that doesn't work. So people, be warned of dealing with gsxstac.

As for the bolt, I have slotted in heavily in two directions, and had it drenching in wd-40 all day yet it won't budge. I tried to drill it but can't get more than 1/16" threw it being hardened steel... Found a shop locally that says it'll be $35 if he can drill it with a press, and $75 if he has to use a laser to burn it. This sound right?

Whatever you do, Dont take it to havana machine. If that where you got the quote from. Local CODsm ground has had not so pleasent results with them. Good luck on getting the bolt out.

Dang it! Yep, that's exactly where I got the quote! Any idea what went wrong in his dealings there? I'd imagine a bolt extraction wouldn't be too involved.

I am continuing to try and get it myself, but for 6 hours of drilling (off and on breaking bits left and right!) I'm only halfway threw the bolt for the FIRST sized hole!!!

What kind of turbo is the housing off of?

Well I think it's a real evo3 16g, so maybe I don't understand your question. It's a TD05 compressor housing, and a evo3 exhaust housing (dunno the proper name).

Okay, That what I thought it was off by looking at it. I mean you can try havana machine, but they wont give you a solid estimate and gaurantee they wont mess up the threads on it. I was with you though between a rock and a hard place except you are worse due to the evo exhaust housing.

Helicoil - drill, tap, helicoil, and then you can use the same bolt... sorta expensive ($40ish) , but it works real well.

Well I finally got a decent sized hole drilled in the bolt, and already broke off a extractor (#3) in it! LOL! I barely was able to get it out. I think I'll have the shop remove it with a laser! OMG

I guess I'm just not a big enough idiot to remove a bolt that's this stuck.

Course I could just get a new turbo housing. Will a 14b housing fit the 16g turbine wheel?

The price difference of having someone extract the bolt is FAR less than the housing you would have to pay for to replace it. I would get the "idiot" shop to get the bolt out for you.

I feel pretty bad not being able to get it out. I suppose if I went out and bought a drill press I might have better luck. But I've gone threw 8 drill bits, and 7 dremel bits getting this far!

Dont feel bad.. Those bolts are very, very strong.. Have you tried heating the bolts with a torch when you try to remove them? Try that and i bet it comes out. :thumb:

Yep, that's the extractor set I bought at sears... Broke off every one of the drill bits except the big one, and the smallest 3 extractors! I've just dropped it off at Havana Machine to see how good a job they can do...

I don't think it would have been this hard if I had a drill press. But trying to keep a handheld drill lined up is very difficult and the slightest angle breaks them off...

According to that vfaq my next step was to drill it completely out! LOL!

did you skip our advice on using heat?

No, I tried it... Heated it up with a welding torch till it was red... That just made the next extractor break off faster! OMG

EDIT: And no, I didn't melt it!

Well, I got it back from the shop. They had to drill it out completely (it wouldn't come out for them either) and they sleeved and re-tapped it. So thanks everyone for the suggestions. Also I wanted to add, gsxstac finally did respond to my email and gave me back the funds ($30) to cover removal. So he made it right.

Thanks again. Now to install it! :D

noobish thought.
what if you tried to unbolt while your manifold is warm/hot?
like run the car for few mins and try unbolting the mani bolts.
