rear shocks??

i was just wondering how many people have replaced rear shocks on there dsm in here?? i have heard its not hard at all....is this true??? do i need any special tools? please post if you have done this before.

Really one of the simple jobs on the car.

Jack the car up, 2 or 3 bolts up top (can't remember, been a while), 1 on the bottom.

The only special tool you need is a spring compressor and you can rent them at AutoZone or PepBoys. Usually you just give them a deposit and when you return it in the same condition you got it, they give your deposit back. 1 nut holds the spring "hat" on.

Put the car back together and your done.

I made my own spring compressor. Not as safe as the real one but cheap. All you do is make a rectangular frame out of 2 x 8s and fasten securely with corner brackets so it does not bust open. Drill a hole that is about 4 inches in diameter in the part you will use as the top. then to compress the spring simply use a floor jack. I did it and it worked. Taking the spring in and out is simple as well.

That sounds about as UNSAFE as hell!! You definately have bigger balls than I do as a spring coming loose can do some damage or end up hurting yourself.

Really you can rent a spring compressor for nothing, just a refundable $15-$20 deposit. It is a lot safer and easier than the jack method.

The rears are simple. It took me maybe an hour and half to take the old ones off and put the new ones on. I put on Illuminas with Eibachs and what took the longest was getting the pro-kits off of the stock shocks. The fronts are a pain in the butt though. Like the others said, rent a spring compressor if you don't have one, it makes the job a breeze.
