Ok, I bought a new rear shock for my AWD and am about to install it. Am I going to need a shock compressor to do the installation or will this be a job that anyone can do at their own house with basic tools?

Getting the old shock off of the car can be a pain, I would suggest some PB Blaster that has been allowed to sit for a couple days.

Good point 2liter, spray the lower part of the shock where it slides into the sub-frame. I had to actually cut mine off with a grinder on one side, the other side just popped out, depends on how your luck goes.
