I know my car pretty well but unsure what would shut everything off like that and then just kill it the second time not does I had lights and everything sometime when I low on gas being a fwd when it sloshed around it will cut out but had a 1/4 tank any suggestion appriciate and trust me I haven't had a chance to look over it just yet and please don't suggest stupid things like head gasket I believe it electrical maybe fuel as well anyone with similar problems let me know what you found I have a shop and will be doing full tune up now plugs wires fuel filter other then that I'm not sure what I'm looking for any suggestions let me know thanks

I'd recommend logging your ISC position to see if it's moving when that happens, or if it moves at all during times that the car is idling. Also follow the correct adjustment procedure for it, either by the FSM, or using link (which i'd imagine you have based on the stuff in your sig? You should make a build page.) Also check out this page for suggestions, if your idle is higher than stock then there are adjustments to the coasting fuel cut that are detailed here: http://www.ecmtuning.com/wiki/idlesurge

I appriciate the info and advise and yes I do have link but link and the mod list in my profile is my tsi I also have a gates fwd which is a bone stock daily and which is the one having trouble I plan on getting link for it as well but this seems to be somthing. Utting all electronics and everything at times. But I'll take ur advise and probably make a build threading both when the time comes haven't had much time or motivation to work on it being snow and cold all the time but do plan on doing alot to both

I would also check your battery terminals for signs of arcing on the hood. Is it tied down? Is the battery unusually tall?

Upon further inspection as in today when I got up I wondered why when I opened my hood last night and shut it the car started up like normal... I couldn't see anything last night on the side of the road and when it started I didn't plan on finding out till I got home I looked today and first thing I noticed the battery was loose and tried tight in the hold down bolt... well lone and behold it's stripped so bolt now won't tighted... looking closer the wing nut part of the positive terminal looked white and blackish looking at the hood well I'm sure you know what happened now.. it racked and slightly welded to the hood distorting the metal... the battery is normal sized I suppose it just came loose hitting a bump and the screw stripped and positive hit the hood shorting it out ... problem solved... now I guess I have to drill and reap the battery hold down screw hole... but guys I really appriciate the help and quick responses

Well guys the saga continues I suspect it did somthing... or the plugs and wires are now in desperate need.. today after Re drilling and taping the hold down (works great now) as I went to leave work I pulled out and hit some boost like I always do and right at about 4500_5000 it just stopped and lunged forward like it ran out of gas.... thinking wtf? I drove off down the hill and tried to do it again it didn't and reved fine... half way home it studded and almost died like it did the night it shut off from the batt arcing on the hood... but it cough it self... and at another red light coke at 4500 again.... checked all connections and fuses and looked pretty damn good under hood don't see anything amiss being I have never graced her with new plugs which I been meaning to this is my next plan of action along with upgraded but used spark plugs I got off a free Lancer here on the fourms which were used in a running 11s car nonproblems mgk wires I believe also have some goodies for her that will be going in soon some that might rule out potentional problems like fuel pump fmic and other stuff.. this car does have some boost leaks but nothing crazy and has been running fine and near perfect until the batt arc... also planning on getting the batt checked.. wish me luck on the search for the curse LOL any previous experiences to ckeck?

A rare possibility is the gas tank pickup tube (or fuel pump hanger) is partially broken and swinging around with car changes in motion. When it moves out of the fuel you lose all fuel pressure. It's rare but has been reported a couple times over the years.

I considered that same thing when I bought a spare tank for this car (which hasn't been installed yet Due to needs boiled and sealed ) when I took the old sending unit out to the pump was rusted and the hose was ruptured also the whole piece moved side to side very easy
