I have a 1990 GSX 5speed that I have been building for the last couple of years. Today was going to be the big day to start the car for the first time. I installed the battery and turned the key and nothing happened. After checking things out I found the big fuse for the MPI circuit was missing. I installed one and hit the key again and the starter started spinning. I turned it off and the starter kept spinning for 10 seconds after the key was out of the switch. I tried it again and as soon as I turn the key to run the starter would engage and start spinning over and keep going for 10 seconds in the off position or with the key out. :ohdamn:

I replaced the starter relay, and the starter 2 times and still have the same problem. Also the car will do this with out having the clutch depressed.

Hopefully someone here can help me figure this out.
Thanks in advance for any help I get

Patrick

Check all wiring by the ignition, it sounds like something is shorting out and keeping the ignition in "crank" position.

You can bypass the clutch by disconnecting the connector by the clutch pedal. It's probably disconnected.

That's kind of a weird situation, IMO. I was going to say it would probably be your starter relay, but if you say you've replaced it, it's probably somewhere along the ignition circuit as viprez said above.

The starter gets constant power but the circuit is closed when grounded by the relay, which is controlled by the ignition circuit. I'd start by checking out the ignition electrical diagram. You can see a free version on the web on scribd. Here's the link

Is the car starting and the starter still engaged? Or is it not starting at all?

Thanks for the reply guys

I haven't let it start yet, it's a complete rebuild. I was thinking switch but is there something in the MPI maxi fuse circuit that lets power go to the switch ? I just got a set of 1990 service manuals so that should help me trace all the wires.

With some luck it will be an easy fix. I just hope no one hacked the wires up under the dash too bad.
