.... but isn't using adjustable cam gears the same thing as purposely jumping the timing belt a tooth foreward or a tooth back on the cam sprocket? i know its not exact but is that basically what it does? btw, im not attempting this, i am just curious.

a full tooth is too much. they allow you to "move" the power band

^ ^ ^ Yup. Adjustable cam gears provide for a much finer adjustment, less than part of a tooth. Proper cam timing can pick up as much as 20 horsepower.
