Turbo 1; Suspected it was a headgasket, and it wasn't. Took the turbo apart, and the exhaust housing turbine was completely blown apart. Got a new turbo, just the actual compressor wheel and exhaust housing turbine, and replaced everything that went wrong.

Turbo 2; Ran great and spooled incredibly fast, for about 2 days. Then the car starts running poor. Like it's on 3 cylinders, or not getting enough fuel or air. Still not sure. I take it home and check everything and it looks good, then I feel the turbo. A good bit more shaft play than it had a day or so earlier, and also, the compressor wheel looks, well, mangled.

Any ideas on what could cause two turbo's to just go like that? I'm planning on getting a 16g for my birthday in like a month or so, and I don't want to go ####ing up my 3rd turbo straight.

Did you replace the entire turbo with a new one? Or did you just replace the compressor and turbine wheels? If you just replaced the compressor and turbine wheels, they have to be balanced, otherwise the turbo will destroy itself again. The first picture shows the turbine heat shield, those are known to go bad like that. I've seen your car around before, I go to Stark State.

you should also check your oil lines to make shure they are not crimped, i had that problem and it was ecause of my oil lines being pinched together. god luck. rj.

I use to try to purchase used 14B turbo's on ebay to save money when one went bad...this is not recommended...most of the time these turbos have ridiculous amounts of miles on them, its best to just save up and get a brand new EVO III 16G or better. If you keep buying trashed turbo's, you could end up spending more than you would have on just buying a brand new turbo from the start.

Make sure you don't have any metal shavings in your oil, if you do, it will cause you to keep blowing turbos.

Having metal shavings in your oil is definitely not a good sign and would be more than just a problem with your turbo. I sure hope your not speaking from experience.

I don't know.........turbo #2's compressor wheel looks pretty mangled to be an oil problem. It looks to me like something was hitting the blades. Like said earlier, I would check for metal shavings in the oil. Just drop your pan and drain the whole system. That way if there's any metals floating around there, you won't kill anymore turbos.

Lack of oil feed or clogged return would cause lack of clean cool oil to the turbo. This will cause excess wear to the bearings and can cause the compressor wheel to make contact with the compressor housing. Then you will end up with a mangled copressor wheel.

I agree with the first post. It looks and sounds as if you didnt have the turbo rebalanced after the rebuild which caused the second failure.

Yea, I went through 2 turbos because of metal shavings. I will never use a shop to do my oil change again. They didn't tighten down the oil filter and I lost all my oil on the highway and shot a bearing through the engine. THe loss of oil caused my turbo blades to hit the compressor housing and guess what, more metal shavings going through the engine. That is why I said check for metal shavings, the blades on the turbo look like some pieces broke off and could go through the engine again and blow up the turbo.
