It's not just filtered in house and re-sold.

They have to send it out to be recycled. The process is a complete reversal of the original process, and then it's refined again. There's alot of work involved, and the final product is just as good as the stuff you bought to do your last oil change. There was a detailed explanation of the process on Modern Marvels on The History Channel about 2-3 weeks ago.

I ove that show. Wish I had cable to watch it.....

I don't see how any shop could "clean up" their own used oil to a degree that it could pass for new oil. At my shop, the old oil is pumped to a tank and the Saf-T-Kleen man comes around about every two weeks to pick it up for proper recycling. We do get "bulk oil" but that only denotes that instead of coming from a bottle, it's coming from a large tank in the back. Ours happens to be made by Pennzoil.

If you know of any shops that recycle their own used oil, then you should be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau, as well as the government, as I'm sure there are some environmental laws prohibiting that activity.

I didn't literally mean "clean up" as do it themselves... as 99_gstracer said, there is a process that is done to turn used oil into "new" oil... I'm not saying that anything is wrong with new or "used / recycled" oil, but I'm just educating the people that don't know about this....
