So I got fed up with the guy that was working on my car and took it home yesterday.

I have a 1996 Eagle Talon TSI FWD
My engine spun a rod bearing after a oil change gone wrong and sat for about 3 years.

I replaced the engine with an engine pulled from a 98 purchased from this websites classified forums.

The mechanic-
Swapped my engine
Timing Belt
Balance Shaft Belt
Power Steering Belt
Water Pump
Fresh fluids / Gas
Battery
Spark Plugs

Currently the car is back in my drive way, it starts, runs and drives I drove it home, BUT when idling at 1k rpms it shakes and i can smell gas. When i bring it up to 1500 it stops shaking and i cant smell gas anymore. The mechanic said that its misfiring on cyl 2/3 an running rich. He told me he did a compression test, boost leak test, swapped the coil packs, he hooked it up to a snap on diagnosis tool and its not spitting out any codes my check engine light is not on. WHAT DO I DO NOW?? I've asked a few friends and friends of friends and some say that it could be my ecu some say that it could need to be tuned. How do i check and see if my ecu is bad and would tuning really solve the problem I have? I had one kid say its my tps and another say its not my tps because my tps doesnt control my idle.

Here is a video if there is any more information / pictures / videos i can take to help figure this out then let me know, or if there is anyone around the northern Rhode Island area that can come check it out for me then pm me and i'll send you my cell number and we can set a date / time that we can meet up. Thanks for all your help I really appreciate it

the smoke is not from my car I was smoking a cigarette.

I would pull your injectors to verify what size they are...stock are 450cc. It is possible the 'replacement' engine has larger injectors, causing the rich condition.

I had a mechanic change out my engine with one out a 97 GST, everything was going grate until we started it... A buddy of mine said "it sounds like a big tractor is raping a little tractor" yea, it was that loud. I went thru 3 different mechanics that couldn't tell me what the problem was. I ended up rebuilding the engine just to find out the head caps were not the right caps... Somehow my first mechanic didn't keep the caps with the right head and ended up swapping them. FYI head caps are only made for that specific head and no two heads can run the same caps.

Luckily I still had the original head..

I couldn't play your video for some reason.

Good luck!

Are you using the CAS from the 96 or 98 engine?

Good call. In the video I don't see anything on the passenger head which tells me a he's running the 95/96 CAS located under the intake cam gear.

But if it was swapped with a 98 engine, the mechanic would have to know to relocate the 96 CAS to the 98 head, under intake cam, reuse 96 intake cam, and seal the hole on the 98' head, passenger side

+1 on what guys are saying about the cam sensor. The 97+ motors will bolt in the same but the wire harness' and sensors are slightly different. Cylinders 2 and 3 are run from the same coil so there could also be a problem there.

Something is messed up in the ignition timing. So I would double check everything.

your "CAS" cam angle sensor is located behind the intake cam on the right side on 1995/1996 4g63's make sure that it is plugged in the plug is next to the ac compressor plug. and like others have said might have or havent been swaped from the left hand location on the Intake side where the block off plate is.

I would also check your knock sensor to ensure that it is plugged in thats located behind your block and plugs into the left side of your harness neear the thermistat plugs.

One thing that I haven't seen anyone ask yet is. Did you swap the injectors from cyl 2 and 3 with cyls 1 and 4? And did the misfire move with the injectors? After that swap the plugs. And check the resistance in the plug wires.

i could go swap them right now but i wouldn't know how to tell if it was misfiring i dont know a single thing about cars

pulled out an injector has a blue top going to buy a set of stocks and switch them out hopefully this solves my problem, will post an update soon. thanks for all your imput

Before your spend money, read this link above. It indicates that stock 450cc injectors came in both black and blue tops. See if there are any numbers on the injectors to confirm.

BUT, I think the problem is in your CAS (Cam Angle Sensor). The 95-96 is different than the 97-99. Since your have a 96 ECU, you need to change the spark plug wiring, that will get it to run much better. But you still have the problem of the inverted CAS signal. Read the followng two posts which will provide all the info you need. (Don't get confused about the discussion of the 'check box' in Link, they are talking about the ECMLink tuning tool on a laptop. My guess is you don't have this. BUT it would so solve your problem!)

If you have a 97-99 CAS in 95-96 body you would have to swap both the spark AND injector wires at the ECU (or power transistor)

For reference, the CAS signal is all the same from 89-94, 97-99 sensors. The 95-96 is the inverted years concerning CAS. So if you have something from 95/96 paired with 89-94 & 97-99, things will need to change electronically.

I thought I recognized that...LOL

OP, ask your mechanic what parts he swapped from the 96 assembly to the new 98. If used all the 98 ignition stuff then that would explain most your problems. Basically the ignition system is inverted in years 95/96 vs all other dsm years.
