Lake Forest,
My '90 GSX has developed a horrible noise that sounds like it may be the speedometer cable. It starts making a noise as the speed increases, which leads me to believe this is a speedometer cable issue. I was hoping that someone may have heard of this (or had similar problem) to offer a solution. I just got my car running again months after pulling the stock turbo that was not working, and right after I fired it up, the ECU crapped out making the interior of my car smell like hell. To say the least, this car has put a dent in my wallet, and I cant stand this noise now that the car runs great! Any tips to remove the electrical stench is appreciated too!

Please help so I can enjoy my car.

did the graphite fix the noise?
i just started having the same problem last week,
i took the cluster apart to see if there was a rubber piece or something inside the speedometer. the WD 40 didn;t fix it.
maybe i should try your idea. please let me know how it worked

tried the graphite and it didn't work either.
i just replaced the cable, the problem is fixed. it was an easy job,25 minutes to complete.

did it make a noise right when you hit the gas and got louder, as you went faster? I have the same problem. how much was the cable ?

What is the sound? my car makes a whirring sound that increases/decreases with speed.

i got it from the junkyard for 10 bucks. a friend on mine removed it from his car and submerged it in oil. fixed it too.
the noise was really bad, it increased with speed. i first checked the brakes and cv joints. as everything was ok, that's how i found out it was the cable.
there was a guy that suggested the graphite. i tried it without results. good luck guys.
if you need any info on how to remove it from the car just let me know.

this is how i did mine.
working from the cluster side, i disconnected the cable. then i took apart that plastic part that hooks the cable to the cluster.
from the engine compartment, i started pulling on the cable and it came right through the hole, with rubber plug and everything.
the important part is taking apart the white plastic terminal, otherwise it will not fit through the hole. if you need pics just let me know,
good luck
chucky
