There is no way that this is normal. This coupler was just put on brand new last week. This would explain the smoking and probably the bad cold idle I think.

To me it looks like time for a turbo rebuild or upgrade.

THe compression on the car is still good.
Each piston is 175 exactly on 8.8:1 pistons. So this has to be the reason I am losing oil.

You check the return line for kinks or what not...that could also cause some oil to get past the seals, but not necessarily mean the turbo itself is bad.

The oil return line is nice and straight.

The throttle body is clean though and so is the o2 sensor and wideband. I didnt see any oil anywhere except for this coupler and the coupler that attaches the air filter to the turbo.

I just did a boost leak test and when I pressurize the system I hear gurgling coming from the turbine.

turbo seals = dead :notgood:

That is what I figured. Oh well, it led a good life.
How hard is it to rebuild these things so I dont have to give HRC an arm and leg.

The process isn't too bad, and you probably have all of the necessary tools (ring snap pliers are the only "specialty" tool needed). You can do it in just a few hours and the rebuild kit, that comes with new seals, bearings, etc., can be had for $100-$150. Call Hahn directly for this kit: I can't comment on the quality of eBay kits.

Here's how Corbin rebuilt his 16G:

I have been looking at his page for a while and it has never steered me wrong yet.

I guess if worse comes to worse and I dont get it back balanced correctly then I can still send it to hahn for a rebuild.

You never learn unless you do it yourself.

It looks easy enough, mark the housings unbolt, clean and reassemble.
