Hello all, I am looking for some advise/suggestions.

When I bought my 98 GSX, I was told that there was an issue with the transmission gasket that caused a leak, which lead to transmission failure. This was many years ago, and the previous owner bought a used 95/96 transmission. They quickly realized that the 95/96 transmission would not bolt up to the t-case. They had to also replace the t-case with a 95/96 t-case to match it up.

Fast forward to the present, I'm now planing on having the transmission rebuilt/upgraded to withstand the extra power the car has (my goal is 400whp). I have started my research on this issue (why and what is the difference in the tranny+t-case in the 95/96 to the 97/98/99). So far I have only found out that there is ONE extra tooth in the 97/98/99 trannys/t-case. Over the 95/96.

So my main questions are; is the 97/98/99 trannys/t-case stronger, are they more efficient? Why is there 1 more tooth?

Should I just rebuilt the 95/96 setup I currently have? There is a local seller close to my location that has a 97 setup for sell off a shell for $600, is it worth the money and time to get the 97 and have that rebuilt/upgraded?

Any advise would great!

The extra tooth makes the ratios different. The early t case must be used with 95-96 trans and the same for the 97-99. Or you must swap the ring gear in the trans to match the years of the t case. With them mismatched there's a couple mph difference in the speed the front wheels would be driven vs the rear.

I don't believe there's any benefit strength wise between the two.

Thank you for the input, I was assuming there wasn't any extra strength in the later years transmissions. But I wanted to ask. I'm leaning towards keeping the 95/96 tranny/t-case that's in the car. And have that rebuilt at a local shop. Thanks for the information.
