I bought a '91 GST from a guy that I know. The car wasnt running when I got it because it quit running or something, and he sold the alternator, starter, and radiator, but I got it for a good price so I bought it. Well, I put all new gaskets in it, checked the bottom end (with the oil pan off), took the valve cover off, put an alternator, radiator, and starter in it and looked to make sure everything appeared to be in working order. The turbo is great, no shaft play or anything. Well, I went to start it after working on it for a while (couple months) but it doesnt start. I checked and it is getting fire to the plugs. Compression is great on it. I took the fuel feed line off, and fuel comes out, but not as i would expect. It just puts out a very weak, little stream. The fuel return doesnt push out much gas while off the car either. I dont hear the fuel pump come on when I turn on the key. Can you hear them on the 1g's? Ive checked the fuses, and all of them are good. It has a 1/4 tank of fuel. I put a new fuel filter on it as well. This is my first 4g63t. Ive had a few 420a car's and know them backwards and forwards, but need a lil help on the 4g63. Thanks for any replies or advice. If I can give any info to better help address what might be wrong then tell me, and Ill try to give more info.

P.S. The car tries to roll over very strongly, but just acts like one that wasn't getting fire or fuel. Thanks again. Also, it should start even if the alternator belt was off, correct. I thought that it should, but my dad say something about his blazer not having the belt on and it wouldnt start. I just figured that I would ask to make sure.

You basically just answered you own question in giving the symptom's. First off you can't really hear it run unless you have an aftermarket pump. Check the voltage at the pump and then if that is good your only option left is to replace the pump.

I would check voltage at the fuel pump, as 95bLaCkGsTuRbO suggested. Also, I would recommend checking the injectors and possibly the FPR for good measure. But I would put my money on a faulty fuel pump. There is a way to hook your fuel pump up to a 9 volt battery and turn it on manually -- I've lost the link to the FAQ on that, but I'm sure a seach would turn it up.

In all the 1gs I've driven/ridden in, I could hear the fuel pump whirring from inside the car (faintly), and could definitely hear it when I put my ear up to the car w/ the gas cap off.

Ok, take some carb spray and spray into the intake while cranking. Be careful so you can keep your eyebrows. If it tries to start then you have spark at the right time, and compression. If it doesn't then we need more input. Now, take a thin long screwdriver and put the tip on an injector. Put the other end to your ear and have someone crank the engine over. You should hear a sharp metallic clicking noise. If you do then the injectors are working and so is the PCM. Take a 12 volt test light and probe the proper input wire at the fuel pump. "schematic needed" Use a Haynes or Chilton for this. I prefer a factory service manual and have such for mine. Now making sure the light is grounded good. This is vitally important. If you can't get a good ground use a long small gauge wire hooked to the neg post on your battery to get one. The light should come on for 3 seconds when you key on. If it comes on then you likely have a fuel pump going bad. If not, then you are back to electrical troubleshooting. Switch relays in the relay center and try again. Post your results.

Good Luck

i bought an old 90 s10 about a year ago that sat for 2 years because the Ladies son who owned it died and it wouldn't start because it sat for so long. So i put new spark plugs/wires /distributer cap on it and then Checked everything and it was fine.Had spark but wouldn't start. i sprayed that starter fluid into it and it started for a second then died. My first thought was the fuel pump. NO the pump worked.Well what my dumbass didn't know was that gas goes bad apparently? I was trying to start it with the 2 year old gas that was in it. I siphoned the gas out and put some 94 in and that sucker started right up. It smelt pretty good too. I let it run for about 30 minutes then drove it around. It needed a new clutch but it was fun. I never heard of gas going bad but some old Detroit Muscle Man told me it goes bad so i figured i would try to see if that was my problem and it was. Bought the truck for 400 not running and sold it for 1k running. All it needed was new gas. So my question is do you have old gas in it? Hey you never know it could be something as stupid as that.
