need help from a electronics guru, please

This would in theory create a wideband gauge, although by itself, wouldn't be very accurate. (i.e. Not enough LED's to have a large enough range, like you stated). The LM3914 is a LED bargraph driver chip that uses an analog voltage input for reference. I am not 100% positive that the biasing resistor values are correct for a 0v-5v input to read 0-10 LED's, I would have to build one to verify that.

So long as the values were correct, the chip is supposed to have a very linear curve and can use a reference of up to 0v-12v. This should provide very accurate results.

They could be cascaded together to provide greater resolution, but would require significantly more circuit to do so. A voltage divider, op amp, and some various other components would be needed. This actually is a very viable idea, I currently have the Innovate LC-1 wideband, and have been longing for a simple type of in-cab display. I will have to check and see if I have this IC and I will try this circuit out on a breadboard. If not I might have to order one and have a go at it.

I will post back if I get any results, until then, any other comments would be great to hear. This could be a very good way for those of us with just the WideO2 controllers to have a inexpensive in-cab display.
 
Trouble isn't in the reading, it's in the sender. Without a wideband O2 sensor, you're still dealing with the nearly-binary DSM sensor. The ECU isn't set up to take advantage of a wideband, because the only answer it's looking for from the O2 sensor is "enough" or "too much".
 
Yes that is true, it is all in the sender :thumb: . This curcuit would not turn a narrow-band sensor like what is already used in the car into a Wideband. I am assuming by the origianal post for wanting a Wideband Gauge that it was understood that you would have to have a wideband sensor and controller already installed and would be using this circuit simply for an in-cab display. This circuit would easily accept a 0v-5v reference signal from a wideband controller and would display the information accurately. Would be an inexpensive way to create an in-car display. I will be playing with this circuit over the weekend, should work really nice. Thanks speedy for bringing up this idea :cool:
 
that is correct :thumb: I already purchased a wideband sensor from innovate for (80.00) off of ebay. I'm curious to hear how it turns out? thanks 95red for messing around with the idea :)


P.S: this might be a dumb question but, what is a wideband o2 controller and how does it work?? I thought all you needed was the wideeband sensor and a gauge to monitor it :confused: hhhmmm?? maybe I was told wrong
 
Depends on the setup and brand. The controller is so you have a way of logging it for display after a run, and gives you the interface to a computer (i.e. serial port) . You need a way to save that data and a way to display it on a laptop,.. as well as having a gauge for real-time reference. It also gives you the ability to do the preheat for the O2 sensor and to calibrate it as well. Very important things. The controller is definetly a required piece.
