Hello!

I have an issue with my car, a 2003 Ford Focus with the 2.3l I4, that I think someone here may be able to identify for me.

I have a few bolt ons on my car (Intake, 65mm TB, 4-1 Race Header, 2.5" flex pipe and borla exhaust, and a Pulley kit consisting of Crank underdrive and water pump overdrive pulleys) The crank pulley is a 2 piece pulley

consisting of a bilett alum pulley and a stainless steel tone ring or exciter ring which is read by the crank position sensor.

On my way home from a G2G in SoCal, my car suddenly bogged down, and the Check engine light began flashing. Pulling over to the side of the road, the car felt like it was running on 3 cylinders, and was rough. Shut her down and popped the hood. Spitting while I cursed, I checked all the fluids, all ok, and had my wife fire it up. Ran like a champ. No missing, not even a solid CEL. ??WTF?? I asked myself. Got back in, and headed for the next exit.

Pulled into the next gas station I saw, and grabbed a local phone book, and looked up the nearest ford dealer. Called them and got directions there, headed for their shop. On the way there, I started hearing a rattling from underhood. Got to the dealership, and they pulled 2 codes stored in the PCM, 1) random misfire cyl2 and random misfire cyl3. They also heard the noise and said it was coming from the timing chain area. They guessed that it was a tentioner that was giving out. That being the case, they figured I could make it the rest of my 5 hours home. Take it easy they said, and call if we needed anything.

1.5 miles later.... the rattling got worse, and the engine died. Got it towed back to the dealer, but they were closing, so I bought a truck (Yes, bought an 03 F150) to get me home, and would work it all out later.

The dealer called me later to say that the crank pulley seperated, the tone ring chopped up my CPS, and that is what happened.

Upset at the manufacture of the pulley, I had the OEM pullies put back on, and sent them the bill.

While in there the dealer noted the Crank Seal was leaking slightly, and they had that repaired under warranty.

55 miles later, the same problem with the stock pulleys this time, bogging down, and running like crap, CEL flashing, then rough idle.

Shut it down, let it sit for a second, the fire it back up, runs great. CEL is of course on solid now.

Sitting in the car door and hood open, I rev the engine to about 2300 and this shake begins to develop, lasting through about 2600. Rev past 2600 and it goes away, then get it up to 4200 and it does the bog down thing, and CEL flashing.

I want your opinion here. I have mine, but I want to hear it from someone here.

TIA!!

You might want to ask this of a Focus, or Ford board.

We don't do Hondas here, nor Fords, Chevys, Maseratis, Monteverdis, Vectors, Hillman Imps, Rileys, Datsuns, Chadwicks, NSUs, BMWs, nor even DSMs other than the T/E/L.

If anyone can help this fellow, please do so by PMs.
