Sorry, the title is probably a bit misleading. Can't think of how to word it.

Here's the deal. I have a 1990 AWD...the throttle body is a 90 style. I took it off so I could block the FIAV and change out the shaft seals.

First thing I noticed was that on the butterfly, it opens correctly but the screws that hold it to the shaft were on the reverse side. Let me explain:

-When you take the throttle body elbow off and you look at the throttle plate, you will see the heads of both screws that hold the plate onto the shaft.

-On the REVERSE side, if you look at the throttle body from the BACK side, you will see the threaded portion of the bolt only...

WELL, on mine, the heads of the bolts are on the REVERSE side of the throttle body and the threaded portion is on the FRONT portion that you look at when you take the elbow off.

The throttle plate opens correctly, the throttle cable connects correctly, etc. etc. The only thing is, the shaft is reverse of what it should be.

I have ALREADY completely disassembled the throttle body. The shaft is out, the TPS is off, the ISC is off, shaft seals are out....everything is taken apart already.

NOW, my question is....is it supposed to be like that on the 90?? OR did somebody take the throttle body apart and reassemble it ass-backwards?

I know on my 91 that I had, the heads of the screws holding the plate onto the shaft faced FORWARD. This could just be a simple mistake and they installed it backwards, I don't know.

Can anyone chime in??

This might help.;)

Read all the way through and you'll find out the correct way to set the plate and screws.

I already knew the procedure to doing the shaft seals since I did it on my 91. I was just unaware of the shaft position. Because as I said, the screw heads were facing toward the back of the throttle body, not toward the throttle body elbow.

I guess they just installed it wrong. The only thing is....if they did replace the seals already, they did a whack job because the seals were old and torn up already.

So I have no idea why the heads of the bolts are facing into the IM direction
