does anybody know where I can find a thread on how to do it. I searched here and on dsmlinks forums and cant find one.

Most alternators should be charging from 13.5 to 14.5 while in your vehicle. You can pull it and have it tested for diode leak and such at an alternator shop. Remember it can charge with a diode that is shorted which will kill your battery "parasitic" when your engine is not running. If you want, use an amp meter and removing one cable put it in series to check for amp draw. Most "older" cars like ours should only draw around 30ma or such. Newer ones with their extra electronics can draw up to 750 ma. Or, you can do the same with a test light and see if it lights the bulb. This would indicate a draw which should be dealt with. Some testers check for ripple which is ac current in your system. This indicates a defective rectifier "diode" .

Hope this helps.

Like was previously posted, a parts store will give you a free alternator test. The tester tests regulator voltage, amperage output, and diode pattern. It takes about 5 minutes total and is well worth the time to swing by one.

yea i know....thats what i ended up doing and the dam alternator testing maching started smoking haha...i went ahead and bought a new alternator...this time with a lifetime warranty and my car is fixed
