There is a loud metal on metal grinding noise in my driver side wheel. The noise occurs whenever I turn the wheel left or right, doesn't matter if the car is moving or not. It also makes noise whenever I go over any bumps or up my driveway. I tried taking my wheel off to take a look but Im not sure what I should look for.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

It could possible be the brake pads are almost worn.

Edit: Sorry, after reading that again i noticed you said grinding and not screeching...

it could be a bent tie rod or axel going south or lower ball joint.have someone turn the steering wheel while you listen and see if you can pin point the noise.

You Most Likley have a bad ball joint, which is covered under warranty.

take it to your dealer and have them check it out. (and fix it)

Sorry to bring back a 5 year old post haha but I am having the exact same problem with my drivers side wheel where it is making the exact noise you talk about when turning the wheel and also when going over bumps or loading the shocks. Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

check it for play.could be wheel bearing, tie rod, ball joint, rack and pinion, strut mount.Best way is to lift up that side and see if anything is loose.

check it all, including brakes, but i'm leaning towards the wheelbearing. if you have a mechanics steth, rope a friend, jack up front end, USE JACK STANDS, and have them start the car and put it in drive or 1st. let off the clutch and use the steth to see where the noise is coming from. you can do the same thing if you dont have a steth by using a piece of metal rod. JUST KEEP IT CLEAR OF MOVING AREAS! If it is the bearing you will hear a symphony of grindage.

*disclaimer* ONLY do this if you know how to jack and support a vehicle correctly.

Only do this if you have fwd. Doing this if you have an awd vehicle can screw up your center differential. Just thought I'd throw that in there in case someone else wants to do this.

Its most likely a ball joint. Ive got one thats doing the same thing right now. Leave the car with full weight on the wheels and have someone push and pull your fender up and down or have them turn the wheel while you look at it closely. You will be able to pinpoint the noise to find the joint that needs to be replaced. If its the lower lateral control arm(the straight one with mounting points to the frame, shock absorber, and hub) This is what to look for. YouTube - Ball Joint Recall 2G Eclipse, Talon There is a recall on this. I couldnt get close enough to a dealership at the time since mine was bad enough to strand me in a small town with nothing but a spare tire jack and a small tool box so I ended up having to do it in a parking lot in the middle of december. The part only cost me $50 with another $20 to overnight it. Its not that bad if you ask me. If youre having problems with the dealer not wanting to do the recall, just buy it. Its one of the cheaper OEM parts that youll have to replace on a 2g.
