Ok, needing a little help. I have what I believe is lifter tick. But I'm not sure, and if it is, it's a hell of a lifter tick.

Anyways, symptoms.............

Does not happen when the engine is cold. It starts once the engine is warmed up.

When it starts ticking I can turn off the engine and restart it right away and it is completely gone. Then it will take a while to come back again.

Definitely sounds like it's coming from the top end, timing belt side. And in all honestly kind of sounds like a sawing noise. :hmm:

Cams are not marked up.

Oil pressure is good and fresh.

I'll try to get a video put up sometime, but that's what I have for now.

My first guess would be lifter tick, but try to isolate the location with a mechanics stethoscope or listening through an object (wood, screw driver...). Make sure all your timing components are tight and timing is dead on.

Timing is dead on, I actually just recently replace the belt and timing components. The noise was there before I did the timing.

And I don't have a mechanics stethescope, but I tried it as best I could with a screwdriver and just listening and it sounds like the top end.

I just wanted other ideas, and to see if anyone recognized the symptoms it has.

When you did the timing belt did you replace the hydraulic tensioner as well? If so was it OEM or aftermarket? Sounds like it could be a loose timing belt causing the tensioner arm to flap around. I almost had this happen to me. It ended up ruining the arm as well as needing to replace the tensioner.

Yes, I have the balance shaft belt.

And no it is not the tensioner (it is new). I can tell you that much. Even if it were old it would not cuase it to make this noise.

:hmm: Sounds like your lifters might be shot. Try taking off the valve cover and checking the lifters. You might wanna look into getting 3g revised lifters and I mean the 3rd generation lifters NOT the 3rd gen eclipse lifters. The oil hole on the tops of the lifters are bigger so they lubecates all the parts better thus lifter ticks are gone. I just replace mine, works flawless.

Yeah, my plan is to get some 3g lifters. And I did check them when I was just replacing the valve cover. I didn't see anything visually wrong. But truthfully, wasn't exactly sure what to be looking for.

What is the difference between these 2 lifters could you be more specific.

The 3g lifters have a larger port in them allowing for more oil to flow. They are less prone to lifter tick.
