Intercooler piping material question size

I'm planning of hooking up a ported 14b onto my dsm and am also thinking of getting some kind of FMIC to go along with it.

So, the question is: What is the best material for intercooler piping and how wide should it be? Will mild steel do the trick and will 2.5" width be good enough for this setup? I'm planning on putting a 16g in the distant future so I'd like the setup to work with the 16g as well.

Any info is appritiated. :dsm:
 
Mandrel bent steel or aluminum. Many people have gotten along fine with exhaust tubing. 2.25"-2.5" are most common. 3 inch is probably more than you will ever need and larger diameters are harder to work with.
 
2.25 should be fine most are aluminum at least what you would order but if you make your own just use exhaust pipe like explained above. i have a buddy that pushes like 32psi with 2.5" pipe and puts down 687HP or so out of his talon tsi awd and he is fine.

PS> intercooler pipes are cheep and easy to install then the ends are flared out already so your couplers don't slid off and are already pre bent but do what best suits you if you do it your self you will have more pride in it and it will be some cheaper but you may have time into it unless you have elbows or a mandrel bender.

Ok, I guess I'll go with 2.5" piping but I"m not sure on whether to go with steel or aluminium. Steel tends to rust and I don't want any of that rust to get into my engine or anything like that. But it is cheaper. ### help me decide.
 
if your plans arent to go bigger than this i would suggest the 2.25, the shorter the piping and the smaller the diameter the more restrictive, but also the less turbo lag your car will have.... you have to find a balance between not too restrictive, but not too big so you have to wait an hour before your turbo can fill up your pipes with high psi air....if your keeping the 14b 2.25 short route piping would work best in my opinion...
 
As I stated above, the 14b will be put on for only a few months till I get enough money saved up to get an 16g.
 
aluminum seems easier to work with and is generally cheaper and can be polished with little effort.

SS is more thermally insulating generally harder to work with, more $.

And exhaust tubing as mentioned is easy and very cheap.

Have also seen carbon fiber, which has its own benefits for certain applications.

Depends n what you are looking for.
