I need to replace my tranny, but I was wondering what I should do?

1) Rebuilt the tranny

2) Buy a USED (or NEW) tranny

I was considerin buyin a tranny rather than rebuilding it, because I heard that the labor is a hell of a lot cheaper. I dunno if that's true, but that's just what I've been told. Do any of you guys know where I could buy used/new transmissions?

My transmission took a crap recently, and I was quoted $800+ for a rebuild  WTF. I found a "new" (used/good condition) one here on the Classifieds for $350 bucks.

Moral of the story: I'd check the Classifieds here on Tuners ;)

Consider this, if you have a bad experience buying a used "Good condition" tranny, your gonna wish you had just rebuilt it. Thats the situation Im in now.

/pissed.

I've considered that. That's why I'm keeping my old transmission and rebuilding it myself, after I install the new one :thumb:

Something to consider if you have the time :)

I have to agree. I grenaded my 1g transmission, and I mean grenaded, and I kept the case and rebuilt it and sold it and kept the one I got off of eBay for $400. One of those things you either have to trust who you are buying from or see it for yourself.

arent the 2g 5 spd trannies known for the shit gearboxes? I would rebuild if i was you. That's what am doing now..wut if i buy a used tranny and its grinding or being shitty too? Might as well rebuild it so you won't have to worry about it for a quite a long time. Make sure u get shep or TRE to rebuild it tho..

On an average, how much would a rebuilt tranny cost me? I'm in such a money crisis right now that I gotta save as much money as I can (already $4,500 in debt). I got a quote from a local bay area performance shop and they told me it'll range for about $2,000. Is that over priced, or just about right?

Oh...and would a Evo III tranny fit on my car, or no?

I just had my tranny replaced. I had a local shop remove and reinstall it for $675. They took it out, then I shipped it to Shepherd Racing for the rebuild. It was supposed to be a $895 rebuild so if that would have been the case the price would have been about $1700 after shipping. I had to replace some gears that had broke and a couple other things so mine ended up being about $2500 after everything. Shep even threw in the Torrington bearing upgrade for free since it ended up costing me more than it was initially supposed to. If nothing is broken in yours then it seems sending it to Shep would be cheaper, and also a better rebuild.

Exactly. Not to mention, rebuilding a transmission is a ... er ... learning experience in itself, LOL.

Hahaha. Nah. I was given the option, but I wouldn't want Chris making a "Special" Title just for me, LOL. I'm just "one of the guys" ;)

So that means you wouldn't mind coming to meet a couple chicks with us tonite and "taking one for the team"... :p

Anyways,
Concerning your transmission question you could always get shep to rebuild it at the cost of about $850-1250 and it'd be fine and move into gear like cutting warm butter. Also keep in mind tho it'll cost a little more once you pay to ship it and remove the tranny from your car (unless you do it yourself). I loved my shep rebuild I just hated the car it went in

Oh well... as things progress... ROFL

I say if you're VERY low on cash try to find a used one around $400, if you got about $1,000 to spare get a rebuild done by a known expert of our transmissions and be happy once it's back in the car.

That depends on how hot the chicks are, of course. :shhh:
