that plastic you are talking about is for the lubrication, I have had to pry them out just like on the vfaq I know it sucks and is hard but just take your time so you don break anythin once you lift them or pull them up enough for the gear puller to fit underneath and then you ara all set that's the only way I have done it I am curious if there is a better/ easier way to do that
 
Well guess what? I WAS able to do it "very carefully" as the vfaq suggested

I wonder if in most cases of applications this size and smaller it's really a matter of fitting a couple flat head screw drivers, if they can fit, and wedge them underneath and tap them in with a hammer. I didn't need a hammer aamof. I just used my pecs.
 
Next time use a pulley and a bearing separator to get those off. Screwdrivers often chip gears.
I use a small bearing separator to attach onto the lip of the intermediate gear and then use a puller on the bearing separator. Do not use one of those cheap pullers like you listed. A decent convertible 2jaw/3jaw works nicely. On the fifth gear do not pull up on the gear, only the hub is splined. Once the hub is off the gear slides off as it rides on needle bearings. Yes you need that plastic guide. It is the oil feed for 5th gear and the input shaft. Don't know why you would question that. Are you likely to find parts inside a transmission that aren't needed?
 
Ah, just the hub. Yeah, I went under the gear... and so did the vfaq guy! Ha, fool... I should correct him.

Um, ya know, I'd never been inside a transmission before, let alone an engine before a couple years ago. And after learning about how you guys eliminate valves and controllers and shafts and what not, and shave and cut and stretch stuff, if someone were to tell me that this little plastic utensil looking thing is not that important and could be tossed away with those 16lbs of "balance" shafts that reside right in the belly of the engine it wouldn't seem so crazy, to me at least. Who knows, someone might just say "eff it bro, just secure that bee with some monkey glue or duck tape, better yet both, then call it a day" and save me $20+ on a dealership part. Anyway, thanks for elucidating on this procedure Paulyman.
 
Luckily I've got my old tranny to salvage any superior parts available. Taking em apart slowly here. These transmissions are some technical marvels unto themselves. They look like alien technology to me. They got their own smell too. I guess their oil different other than it's weight. Anyway...
 
Hey, speaking of which, should I get the combo 2/3 jaw puller? When do you ever need the 2 jaws only? Sears has one for $45 I believe and I think it...

what do you guys think of this tool? Never owned a puller myself. How useful is it, at least as far as this vehicle is concerned, though I'm sure I'll need a variety of tools in my lifetime.
 
I got my transmission all apart and I am trying to assemble it back together and cant figure out for the life of me where the oil guide goes can someone help me please
