I can see two bolts bolting a bracket with the cables to the firewall but, they are coming from insde the car. And I think they go underneith the carpet. I have no clue how to get to the bolts on the firewall from inside the car. I really don't think I want to dissasemble the whole floor with carpet if I don't have to? The cables are streched if you are wondering.

Seems to me im not the only one with this prob i streched my cables too , so when i started to replace them i was caught with the same dilema , i looked it up in the haynes manual and it showed even pics that u do have to take the retainer on the firewall out in order to get shifter cables out , how to get to the retainer i couldnt find out anywhere but im going to find out today.....hope that helps

i did it last nite and its fairly easy man take ur carpet out with one screw on both sides n u will see the screws holding the rubber down take them out n thats about it its easy

i'm gonna be doing this soon as well, i'm glad you finish with your shifter cable, i'm gonna be doing mine's this weekend probably, if i run into any help i'll come ask you two if you dont mind hehe..

my shifter cable stretched and bent when i put in a short shifter :| i guess it was time for it to go anyways? i dunno.. anyways i'll be doing it soon.

It's easy, getting to it was the annoying part. You have to disassemble the entire center console to get to it though. (at least it was easier for me this way)

The two bolts on the firewall are 12mm. There's also one 12mm bolt holding a bracket right behind the radio area that bolts down into the floor. You'll see it once you get back there.

You'll have to pull the cables back through the cabin, you can't pull it out from the engine bay.

That's about it. I spent an hour or so removing my cables last night since I was adjusting the slack on it and broke the friggin part where it attaches to the shifter. Had to take it out and run over to my shop to get it welded back together. I didn't want to wait and buy new ones since I needed to get to work this morning. :p Plus, I'm just cheap like that! :thumb:

i will be doing this tomorrow (if my new cables come in)

any more tips from people? I know thise thread is like 6 months old but im bringing it back from the dead. The shop manual doesn't say too much about it. Im hoping that I can get those retainer clips out easily.

Does anyone have a decent pic of the retainer so I know exaclty what ill be yanking on? Im talking about the one that keeps the cable bolted to the tranny and the one in the cabin right underneath the center console.

I used a pair of channel locks and actually used the old cables kinda as leverage, there tough coming out, but spray them with some pb blaster or wd40 and then wiggle them out

lots of PB blast, channel locks, a screw driver, and a little time and those things came off. The second hardest part was lining up the piece on the firewall when i was putting the new one in. It's all done and the new cables shift like butter. Thanks for the help!
