how to find out if trany is good if its not in car

i got a tranny from a guy on tuners. and b4 i pull my other one i want to make shure this one is ok. or maybe upgrade it alittle what would be the easyst and cheapst way of doing this. its for a 1g fwd 5spd thanks

I would drain the fluid and check to see if there are any metal shavings suspended in there. Also, I would crack open the gearbox and check the wear of the gears and bearings. I would probably be a good idea to also replace the bearings. Take it to a qualified tranny shop if your unfamiliar with transmissions. They can be tricky bast@rds!!! Happy hunting

some places also do tranny bench testing.. they can test it without it being on a vehicle.

This is something i would be interested in. My brothers car was sitting for about year before we decided to actually check what was wrong with it. I always thought his tranny was screwed up just from hearing it. But then I actually tried it and saw the clutch was out. And he was driving w/o a driveshaft so I replaced the VC and I'm about to put some brass ring in it for the synchro. So yea I'm interested in bench testing as long as it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. Might as well since it's out of the car since we were changing the cluth out.

Any other suggestions on how to try to check it with your bare hands? I want to get a spare one from a wrecking yard, just trying to minimize the chances of getting a bad one..

I usually try to engage every gear by playing with a shifter arm, turn input and watch output and stuff like that. Anything else you guys can think of?
