I was wondering how many engine mounts, and how many tranny mounts does an Eagle Talon ESI have? My mechanic replaced the front lower I think it was? He did it for $115 out the door. They said that there is another lower transmission mount and it costs $160 to replace it, since it takes a little longer. Am I getting ripped off or not?

I don't have time or the experience to change the mounts myself, so that's not an option. I will pay shop labor rates if I have to.

One mount is still bad though, because the car "thumps" when I put it into gear, and it also has a light surge when I come to a stop at a light. Kind of like it takes a second for the car to shift down into gears, and then back into first. I know this feeling, since I had a bad mount on one of my Chevy's once. Any suggestions guys? WTF

I don't really just wanna go throwing money at these guys when I don't even know what mount is bad. :sosad:

You might have tranny issues. Are you auto?

But yes, If I payed 110+160 an assumed 220 for the other ones.. dude that's like $500 for someone to put motor mounts in for you. Admittedly, I've not done motor mounts on a 420a but I'm absolutely certain that someone else has and that they'd be willing to walk you through it.

Have you checked out any of the tech articles? If it matters, I can do my front roll stop in about 10minutes if I hustle.

Well, like I said in my before threads, I am changing the fluid and checking all areas for transmission problems. This is not a tranny problem though. I'm positive it's a mount problem.

I am willing to pay whatever the shop charges to fix it, since I really don't have the time to do it myself. Plus, I wouldn't trust myself changing them with a free falling engine once it's outside of it's cradle.

Front roll stop in 10 minutes? Define what you mean please? I'm confused there LOL...

What does the book call for mechanic time for these mounts to be changed out? Are they just trying to scam DSM owners or what?

Also, no one answered the first question. How many mounts does a 97 Eagle Talon ESI have?

He's saying he can change the mount in 10 minutes, it's so damn easy.
Jack up the engine. Loosen a few bolts. Put the new one in.
Buy yourself a haynes manual and save $500 LOL

If you have a 2hrs free time tops take out the battery and tray and do it yourself. the tranny is bolted its not gonna go anywhere. 3 mounts.

Only 3 mounts? So I have 1 transmission mount then, on the bottom... and 2 motor mounts on top? One on the left and one on the right...do I have that correct?

Which mount would be making the engine rock when I put it into gear?

There are 3 attached to the transmission (front, rear & drivers side). Only 1 is physically bolted to the engine (passenger side).

Ok so the one he changed (my mechanic) was the lower front tranny mount. One is on the driver's side too, right under the battery tray right? What other mount does that leave me? So technically, that's two transmission mounts, and 1 engine mount itself. He said the one that is making the thumping when I put it in gear (and the car rocking when letting off the brake after putting it in park) is the lower rear transmission mount...right? Is that the mount under the battery tray then?

So after a few short calls to my mechanic and the auto parts store, (just to confirm this by you guys, since you know a lot about DSM's) I believe my mechanic changed out the rear motor mount. There are 3 total..that rear motor mount, a front motor mount, and 1 transmission mount. The transmission mount is what is making is thump when I put it into gear, and let off the pedal and give it gas when I'm already moving. I need someone here to confirm that I at least have the mount part right. 2 motor and 1 tranny right? 1 rear and 1 front for the motor mount, and just 1 (no description) transmission mount. Please, someone confirm this? Yes or no? This is saving me a lot of cash btw.

If one of your mounts is bad enough to cause this kind of issue, I'd simply replace them all. When one mount can't handle it's share of the load anymore the toll is taken on the others.

BTW, have you tried looking for more specific information using the service manual found online and on tuners?

I'd gladly spill my guts out for you on 4g63 mounts but that's apples and oranges. Rather than wait for a 420a guru to [re]appear you might check out the manual.

One has already been changed as far as these mounts go, and he told me the one on the passenger side didn't do anything but hold the engine up in place. Though one has already been changed, I was afraid that not changing the other one quick enough would hurt that same mount again, since the engine is still rocking back and forth.

Haven't checked the manual or any kind of it yet, but thank you for the advice.

Not trying to sound rude bro but pop your hood open and take a look. The mounts attach directly to the frame/engine bay whatever you want to call it, so they should be easy to point out.

By the time it's all said and done you will be paying for a job that equals a timing belt and probably a clutch job all together. The haynes manual usually doesnt say how long it takes to change they just explain how to change them. The mechanics have their own program that tells them how long it will take and he charges you that. So lets say the jobs calls for 2hrs or labor and it took him 1hr. YOU are still paying for 2hrs. This is how shops rake in $$$$

My best advice is to get a haynes manual $15-25 depending on where you get it. You can change them yourself with a some hand tools, jack and a piece of wood to hold the engine up. 1 mount at a time.

These days I would rather take the time to do a job myself then pay a shop tons of my money and still not know anything about my car.

There are a few 420a gurus on here that can verify how many mounts hold up what. I'm sure they will chime in at some point.

Regarding the last post. Actually, the mounts themselves in my area are pretty expensive to change out, and what they charge me right now isn't too bad.

In fact, he is charging me decently enough where he affords part of what more it would cost me to buy the mount at an auto store. They wanted like $60 for the mount at O Reily's, and he was only charging like $55 for the part, and $100 (by the job) for each mount. It cost that much for this one, because I think the transmission mount is harder then the others. The other two were cheaper for labor to get done.

If I decide to change the last and final one on this car, my dad will probably be helping me do it in my driveway though LOL.

Thanks for the replies so far though guys. It's been a huge help.
