I know it's magnetic (and that it's not very accurate anyway) but I'm curious as to how it works. The reason I ask is that I've noticed since I bought my car a few weeks ago, the oil pressure jumps to about 85% right after the car starts and just sits there. I assumed the gauge was just garbage.

I took my gauge cluster out the other night to fix the white-face overlays the previous owner installed and I found out the oil pressure gauge wasn't put back together properly. The threaded rear bracket that holds the gauge together is missing. Here is a picture from a VFAQ that shows the bracket:

I'm guessing that bracket does more than just hold it together. Am I correct?

I think I'm just going to drill out the holes a little larger and use a replacement screw/nut to at least hold the gauge together to install it back in the cluster. If it never worked before, it won't be any different.

I really don't want to buy an entire gauge cluster just for that one little piece for the oil pressure gauge. And I don't have any pick-and-pulls in the area.

Edit: Umm... I definitely, 100% put a thread title. It was "How does the stock oil pressure gauge work?".

Just use an oil pressure gauge. Not very hard to do. Dont know if you want yo go that route. Many people run oil pressure gauge, boost and wideband. But thats just me. I have the oil preasure gauge as well.

Well, that was my next step if I can't get this one working. I'll just rig it up as a placeholder to fill the empty spot in my gauge cluster and then get a standalone oil pressure gauge that actually gets a proper reading. I already have a boost gauge so I just need to get a pillar pod that holds two gauges.

What do you mean by wideband? AFR?

"Wideband is a sensor which accurately measures your air:fuel. It's a tuning device and essential for modding anything beyond a stock fuel system."

stole that from somebody here is the link

also my oil pressure gauge don't work in my talon at all it sits saying nothing and dont move at all.
Going for an aftermarket oil pressure gauge is the way to go.
