I see a bunch of 2g posts but nothing for 1g's. I never thought that running a fully hacked can would be a problem, but I mocked up a crappy little heat shield out of aluminum foil and it actually changed my fuel trims and made the car run slightly better I was amazed. I really have a feeling that this is why my car gets so much knock...

How do I build a filter shield for a stock 1g maf and intake tube???? Anybody have pics of custom shields they made or anything like that????

just go to home depot get some sheetmetal and make a half box around the air filter not that hard and it will make a difference.

I finished! All I can say is that my previous posts describing unknown problems for the last 2 or 3 months were all related to my removal of the stupid aircan. I made a heat shield with some aluminum heat shielding (not sheet metal). It turned out so well, but I was in for a surprise when I got in my car... no more backfire at idle, my knock counts went from 28-35 down to under 10 (I disconnected the computer, hopefully that knock will go down when it learns a little bit).

All I can say is, leave the can on, or build a good heat shield for it. Sheet metal is almost impossible to use to make a shield on a 1g car... you need something that can be molded.

I will post pics later.

Here are some links to the posts I made that were symptoms of the removed aircan:

Or, You can just turn your intake upside down and extend it just the slightest bit, So it is between your bumper/mud shield. Just bring the mafs plug down and plug it in. I would recommend making a bracket so it's sturdy. Here is what it would look like as this is an injen intake...

That looks like a good idea, although I don't know how easily it could be done on a first gen. I have heard of 2g people putting their filter in the fender too, which would also be nice.

lets see some pix bro!! how about a write up... id like to do this on my talon... i have a very short intake pipe for my 2g mas and pull in hot hot radiator air. If i can get a longer intake pipe ill make a heat shield and open up the uicp hole more and install some kind of ducting from the front foglight area to make some real cold air come in!!

pix/write up please!

I bought my tsi with no aircan, just a k&n.. But I do still have my stock aircan from my 94 ES, so I'll hack it up and use it as a heatshield... post pics when its done...

Ya make sure you cut your stock airbox with a good airtool saw. I used crappy wheels and it sent portions of the wheel and airbox flying around. Almost lost an eye.:notgood:

there are like 3 diferent ones on vfaq.com there and you can you some of the tips from how to tech articles... like how to measure the angles of the hood with bbq stick and perferated cardboard... ect
there are pics with the articles on vfaq.com

I was thinking of doing the same thing but instead I bought one these. I bit pricey but it looks sweet and works very well.

I even bought a cool K&N filter.

My only worry is driving in the rain, but in AZ that doesn't happen to often.

If I am not mistaken, the user "Eclipsh" on this forum has one on his 1g. Check out his gallery. I actually have his pics saved to my comp for reference in building my own. I would post them but I dont think it would be proper of me. Someone PM him and Im sure he will have all the answers to your questions.

Im looking at the 2g write up but I still think the 1g should have its own. The space behind the flip up lights is kinda tricky to fully utilize.

I am in the process of constructing one of these devices. I'm using aluminum sheet metal from Lowe's, rivits, roto-zip, and some metal snipper scissors. Just get a couple pieces of cardboard and make sure that its a nice large square piece equal to about 800 square inches to make your mock design. Take your time and use some self-discipline. Its taking a while, but I want to be happy with how it helps my ride. Its summer time and I dont want 100*+ air intake temps, makes the car knock a little and pulls timing. I may post pics, or I may not, but I will re-post how much better it works.

As I promised, I would follow up on how well the heat shield works. Well, it works. My data logger says the air temps remain about 8-10* above ambient whenever the car is moving, but the temp will creep up when stopped, probably because of the stagnant air under the hood. I may fabricate a scoop from the air dam to the space behind the head light to help direct more ram air to the filter. If you can make one of these for your car it will be well worth the effort. They should almost be a mainstream mod, like removing the balance shafts.
