Rebuilt my first tranny, once installed symptoms-

-Shift linkage is hard to shift, can get into every gear, reverse is hardest
-If I release the clutch, in any gear or neutral, the car dies as if I was holding the brakes on.
-All wheels spin freely, still happens if all 4 are off the ground.

I have been advised that these things could be the problem-

-the reverse idler gear is upside down
-the interlock is missing
-the 3rd/4th shift fork is upside down

OK, Here's where I a at now. I pulled the tranny, but I am not experienced enough to know what I am looking for. What I need help with, is how do the gears turn? With the end/top of the tranny off I can put a 36mm socket on both shafts. I turned both shafts freely yesterday, but I still don't know if they were turning as they should. My whole problem seemed to me like everything was locked up, but that isn't the case. So maybe it is just locked up once it is all bolted together because something is in wrong and you can't tell until the transfer case and output shafts are in?

Either way, I'm waiting for Jon at TRE to give me some advice and I hope to take it apart today and see if I can find anything out of place.

I haven't gotten to far into the tranny, but I did note that I could freely turn the input shaft, which makes me wonder why the engine would die when I let out the clutch.

Another update,

I ended up giving up yesterday because I had a touch time getting the 5th gear hub off of the shaft. I don't remember it being that hard the first time. I also had to use a gear puller to get the viscous coupler off, which is also odd because the first time I just slipped it off by hand...

And regardless of all this, everything still seems to be turning correctly, so I am still lost. This is frustrating because I don't know exactly what I am looking for and if it was a blaring obvious problem I probably could find it, but right now I am just noticing little things that I cannot discern whether they are causing my problem or not...

Another thing I can think of is possibly you have too much preload on the shafts keeping them from turning. When you pull the end cover off it releases the preload on the bearings and then you can turn the shafts. Try doing this. Take all the bolts that hold the end cover on and put them in without the end cover. That way you can put the preload on the shafts and still see if you can turn them.

Did you get new shims for your bearings?

Wouldn't I need to put something on the bolts to make up for the lack of the end cover?

If I fully assembled the tranny and I can still spin the input shaft, I should be good to go, right?

I used my old shims, but I figured if anything they'd be too thin, not too thick.

Your bolts will hold the case together just fine without the end cover. Since the bolts can protrude out from the other side of the case. Just tighten it down and see if you can move everything

Ok, well I just put the top back on. Either way, once that was tightened down I couldn't move the input shaft.

I took out the shims and tried again, still no movement when tightened down. So where does that leave me? Did I not press a bearing in all the way? I cannot see any room for pressing more and I don't want to over press the bearing or else they'll fall apart...

Ok, I finally got it. It turns out that I made the mistake to assume that since I didn't change the 1st gear race it woulnd't be the problem. Looks like both new and old bearing have the same part number, 32205, but both have a different letter at the beginning. The new bearing wouldn't seat in the old race. I stuck the new race in and everything lined up...

Yea when you replace bearings you have to replace the whole thing race and all. They are a matched set. Anyway Glad to know you got it to work. :thumb:
