So I know there is a lot of mixed thoughts on using the hood hump as a ram air port, but ive been doing some measuring and what not and it is possible to mount an air box underneath the hood hump and turn it into a sealed and functional ram air. My question is this: how big of a slot would be needed to ensure enought air would get in. Im assuming higher speed wont be as much of an issue as low speeds would be. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
IMO, I love the idea of the hump being used as a ram air, and can look real good if done nicely, however, its way more practical and easy to accomplish by going with more of a CAI design, and placing the air filter by where your fog light would be for more ram air.
 
In my opinion, for you, ram-air isn't going to be a very good idea. One word. WATER. You live in Washington, a ram in the the hood is going to make your car inoperable in the rain or even drizzle. Putting in down in the fender or any other place low to the ground is going to cause all sorts of problems as well. Your best bet is going to be to keep it under the hood. You could always wrap the intake piping to keep it from getting super hot if you want to try to keep your IAT as low as possible. Plus the very slight gain you would get from ram-air as opposed to just a regular cold air intake and good flowing filter won't really be enough to justify gambling on getting water into the engine.
 
Well seeing as the stock TB is 48mm I wouldnt make the opening have any less area than the TB. The stock TB is 2.80in^2, maybe a 1x3" square would be good. If you are still going to be using a filter it will pretty much stop any "forced" air from entering the motor.
 
Well I have thought about the water issue....I might have a few ideas to help combat it.......first...found a mesh that lets air flow but helps to block water out....contour the shape of the hood port to curve down, around the top of the filter, as well as the back of the of the hood port and then have a few drain port in the bottom.....basically mame the air box fully curved around the filter.....if there was a way to combat the water do you think there would be any gains...it would be different....and as far as throttle body goes, I dont have a stock throte body in it....it has a 60mm....

Here's an old picture of how I did mine. This is when the car was only primed before painting and is very dirty. I made it just for fun, but not using it anymore.

I cut out the front section of the hump, and made a carbon fiber scoop. Filled it with body filler and fiber glassed it. My car was turbo'd during this and I didn't make a seal air box for it. Didn't have problems with water, but also didn't notice any difference in performance. Again I only made mine just for fun. I'm switching to a g-speed carbon fiber hood.

Honestly mi'sama that looks really nice. You did that? That seems like it could really help keep under hood temps down to me. Have any pics of it painted?

To the OP- I don't think that the ram air would be beneficial to your car at any speed you';re likely to be seeing. I don't mean that as an insult either. I remember a while back reading about ram air setups on some popular old muscle cars from the 60's and early 70's, and iirc a Trans Am achieved a whopping 1psi at around 120mph or so. It was completely worthless. Could probably find it on google if you're bored enough. :p
 
My original design that I had planned was to make a spiral design inside the box.....smooth curves that tapers down til it get back to the top...thats where the curved surface coming in would help....I wasnt sure if it would create enough pressure inside to do anything....I figured with the right filter and some decent dranage on the bottom to help keep water out,that I might get a little more out of it.......but if it wont benefit much performance wise I think it would add a little extra to it in the looks department without being to overbearing. ....mi"sma....your pic is where I got the inspiration to attempt it.....
