My first thoughts are Blown Head Gasket. I got out of my car 20 minutes ago and smelled the sweet smell of coolant. Popped the hood and heard gurgling from the back of the block. It was dark out so I couldn't see anything but it sounded like air escaping through water. <---hope that explains it well enough.

TO possibly help nail this issue the other day I fired her up and she started blowing white smoke. I would hit the gas up to 2500RPM and when the exhaust gurgled down to idle it puffed white out the exhaust. WTF!

OK GURUS any ideas? Thanks

I didn't check the resevoir as it was pretty dark out. I have no white smoke coming out of the engine area, only out of the tailpipe. And actually the white smoke was a one time thing. I couldn't explain it but it only happened for about 10 minutes 2 days ago and not once since then. Very strange huh... My fiance followed me in the focus and said everytime I hit the gas from a dead stop or while driving she can see a little smoke come out but it isn't really white. More of a grayish clear looking smoke.

OK so The next day I checked the Coolant overflow tank...My Fiance took it to get the oil changed and the dumbasses at the oilchange place filled it waaay too much...about 4 inches above the full line. OK that still doesn't sound like the source of the problem. So this morning I drove it to work about 25 minutes away. car was kept out of boost almost the entire time. after about 15 minutes my temps went from the normal 180 up to 190. At about 20 minutes they went to 195 and when I pulled into work they were at 200. So I pop the hood with it still running and the fan is running and I smell Coolant. I shut her down and listen..more gurgling. I can now see coolant around the rad Cap and hissing coming from it. After about 1 minute the hissing is gone all I can hear is gurgling.

IDEAS?

White smoke out tailpipe is always either coolant getting into the combustion chamber or directly into exhaust pipe thru turbo. Either thru a blown head gasket or leaking turbo coolant seals. Do a compression test to see if HG.

Sounds kinda like a blown radiator cap, doesn't it? I'll bet your thermostat took les merde tres plus grand.

If you're pumping out white smoke, you've blown a head gasket.

Overfilling the overflow resevoir is harmless. It'll just drip out the excess, usually on the first drive.

Ok Got a new Radiator Cap...no more leaking and no more gurgling so that part is fixed. Temps are still going above the standard 180*

This only started after I put on the 3" Downpipe. Could this cause any heat issues?

Had the Head Gasket Checked as well as a compression check done--thinks are good to go. Spark Plugs look great. CRAZINESS....I mean it runs ok now but we are still getting puffs of smoke. Sometimes it just smokes for a good 5 minutes when I start it up after 30 minutes of sitting. UGH I think its the turbo. Whish is a farely new FPT-28. Time to look inside it I guess!

If it just smokes a little on first startup, it could be your valve guide seals leaking... mostly an annoyance... though smoking for that long is odd... check your intercooler pipes for oil I guess... that would tell you if it's the turbo or not, otherwise, I'unno... as for the temps... how many miles are you at? You might want to do a timing belt/water pump/thermostat/balance shaft belt... fix them all at once, and then you'll be set for a while...unless you've done any of them recently...

That's the thermostat rating, and the minimum engine operating temperature. The coolant will normally run up to 220° F or so.

If you want it to stay a little lower, rewire your fans to activate manually and both on at the same time (like when your AC is on). In this case, you can start them early and keep them on when needed.
