High miles on motor..

Hi, I think I found my dsm I'm going to buy ..a 90 gsx. The tranny and clutch are new and body is in decent condition....the only down side is 158k on the stock motor. The guy says he changed the oil every 3k miles and all fluids were flushed. He says it runs great and he never took it to the track since its completely stock motor. So what I'm getting at is it a good idea to get this if it runs good..what should I do first for maintenance precaution? Belts, plugs/wires, hoses ect?

How much does he want for it? Pictures? I would replace the timing belt for sure if it hasn't been done recently. Maybe even replace the Main/Rod bearings as well as the front case.

timing belt, and tensioners, belts, plugs, wires... just kind of go through the engine and start replacing everything that looks if'y. thats my best advice. but timing belt is number one to me because if it goes,,,, your f'ed

1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX it says 140k but the guy said it was wrong. Im not for sure buying it im still going to go look at it for sure just getting opinions

hahaha that looks just like the car i am going to try and pick up next weekend! Well I would ask the guy to provide all receits for the work he "claims" to have done. Then i would offer the guy 2k and see what happens. But i wouldnt pay 2800 for it.

yea I was gonna offer 2300 just to make him a bit happier but like i said gonna go look at it...an hour and a half away too..none locally its ridiculous

I really like the red with black top. If he can prove he really did all that work and it feels right to you, i dont think 2300 is bad at all. How good are the tires on the car?

Definitely check that thing over. His price seems a little high, especially for a 90. If you did grab that thing, I would start collecting 90 year specific parts

2300 seems high to you for a stock un-molested car with all that work done ? Granted he could be lying about all of it but shoot in the nw youre lucky to touch a good running stock 1st gen for 2500-3k

Yes I was. But I mean even $2500 for a 1g AWD, let alone a 90, that is completely stock and SUPPOSEDLY has had this work done to it. I mean I thought I overpaid for my car. $4000, but it had a new 50 trim, FMIC, injectors DSMLINK.....

Definitely check it over for rust too.

Check the compression. You are going to lose a bit of compression with that many miles on it, but if the motor is good you should get some pretty decent numbers.

Even 160k miles.. I think is still good, as long as motor runs strong and puts out good compression.. I would offer $2000 Cash tops! Considering everything checks out and you know what you are going to be prepared for..

Since when is 158k high miles for a DSM?

Up until last year a good buddy of mine used a 6-bolt in his 2G which he personally had in three different cars; the mileage when it was removed from the first car was 180k, and it was guessed that when the engine came out of his 2G it had around 280k on it. Was boosting 25psi with a 20G at the time- the only modification was ARP head studs, cams, and a balance shaft elimination kit.

As long as it's well cared-for, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if the price is right and it's what you're looking for.

I personally dig the 90 models and 158k isnt really that bad at all! You should be able to look at the ecu and see if it has been rebuilt it will usually have some kind of seal on the case. He has already done the trans so it should have at least another 50 of decent to medium driving left in that motor. This is a 6bolt dsm were dealing with!
