Help! Strange Bucking at WOT.

Here's the info:

96' TSi AWD
1G BOV (crushed)
T28 Turbo
Stock IC Piping
NGK Sparkplugs/Wires


Lately when I hit WOT, there's a strange bucking/surging in the car. What's even more strange is my boost gauge spikes to over 20 PSi (past the end of my gauge) when I generally only run about 13-15 PSi. Sparks are NGK 0.7 mm and wires are fine.

As well, as a side, when I drive at normal RPM, it seems I can hear a slight hissing sound coming from the engine bay. But this only happens when the car is moving, not when stationary. I tightened all the obvious clamps (TB, IC, BOV, Intake, etc.) so I don't know if it's a leak.

Anyone have any ideas for me?

Check for a vacume leak. There is a faq on the web somewhere about how to do this. Hissing would lead me to think you have a leak somewhere.

Bucking sounds like fuel cut or MAF overrun.

Is it possible that my BOV isn't sealing well? (Messed up during crushing?)

Gap your plugs again. It worked for me.

Moved to problem diagnosis.

I would think if you were spiking that bad you may be hitting fuel cut or just running too lean.

Your first step is fixing the boost spike.

Mine bucked under two conditions. Boost Leak, a serious one. Needed to change plugs.
