Hey guys,

I have owned my 95 talon tsi awd for about 7mos now. In December i was making a right hand turn and herd a loud bang, and then my clutch started slipping... It was pretty bad i would let the clutch out and the engine rpms wouldn’t match the wheel speed and it wasn’t moving too well. So i put the car up and got an act 2100lb pp and installed a new ss line, slave cylinder, clutch fork and ball. And now it’s doing pretty much the same thing still slips a lot, and i don’t think that a brand new clutch would be doing that.
Now i think my rear diff might be causing the problem. How could i check to see that it would be bad? Either that or i am going to rip the rest of the tranny out again... I am really stuck and need some help figuring this issue out. Thanks Cody

flywheel was resurfaced to the correct step of .610" I am going to take the rear diff cover off and change the fluid at the least. if all is good then it might be the clutch is need of some adjustment.

it looks like the fork is right in the middle of the boot. I will look at it closer tommrow when their is more light out...

Let me get this straight.
You are turning and you hear a bang and after the RPMs climb but the car doesn't speed up like you expect.
You change the clutch and it's still doing it.

Is this correct?

Have you ever smelled the clutch slipping before or after the new one?
How hard were you driving when the bang happened?
What did the old clutch look like when you took it out?

Steve

What you could have done is made a small layer on the new clutch. There are proper ways of breaking in a clutch, and if you dont do it properly, you can "glaze" the clutch. When you glaze it, it puts a small layer on the clutch and it feels like it is slipping. I have had this happened to me before and it was contuing to slip a little bit after it was glazed. It took me about a month before it finally stopped, I was ready to change it again. Just my 2 cents though.

The clutch can’t be glazed because I only drove it for about 2 miles, and i didn’t ride it or slip it at all. At 2500 rpms right when boost occurs the engine will rev up and I can feel its making power but it doesn’t go to the ground. I don’t think it’s the clutch. When I herd the loud bang like an engine or tranny blowing up I was shifting from first to second making a right hand turn. And the engine revved up and it slipped a whole lot. There was some clutch burning smell but it wasn’t too bad, the flywheel was roasted up with discolorations. I can send you pics of the old clutch; the material was down to the first set of rivets and looked like it was oem Mitsubishi.

What I believe to be the problem is either the viscous coupling or rear diff. I think the rear diff is okay, but I don’t really have the energy to take the sub frame out to check the case to see if that went to holy hell. If I spin one of the front wheels forward the other spins backwards (xfure case is off). I think I am going to take the tranny the rest of the way off and check to see if the clutch is all right, and probably take the vc out of the tranny. Is there anyways to test a vc, to see if its gone bad. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks Cody

my feeling is that it isnt the clutch. Check the harmonic balancer and the crank for play. I know CW happens to like .0005% of the dsm population, but get it checked out. One of the symptoms involves a step of turning the wheel and stepping on the clutch..... before you go and throw a new diff in there and waste more money, make sure the motor is still good to go

i honestly dont understand why crank walk would be a factor in the problems i am having it seems to be a drive train issue... engine runs perfect but i will check it at some point.

It really sounds like a drivetain problem. Either a broken diff or axle.
I once pulled the drivers side rear axle out of the diff in a agressive lane change and afterward thought I had blown the clutch because of the way the RPMs would climb but the car didn't accelerate under load. Taking it easy the car would move just fine, which is how I limped home.

i re-read the original thread and i take back what i said... when i read it the first time it sounded to me like it was happening every time you turned the wheel to the right. If its happening randomly even when the wheels are straight then its something drivetrain related

Yeah i think i have a diff problem, or a cv shaft, how can i tell if i have a broken cv shaft? as far as i can tel theirs not problems with the cv shafts, I think it might be my center diff, or vc. I am going to swap the tranny i think and see if that cures it if not rear diff problems. Thanks for replying guys its been a struggle to find anyone who has any ideas about my drivetrain problems.

My vote is on the center diff, personally, or a popped out axle, as steve suggested.

If you keep on running the car with this problem, your VC will probably overheat and go too.

I am not currently driving the car at the moment. I am in the process of looking for a tranny to put in it. Will any tranny work as long as it has a 23 spline output shaft. I am not sure i think thats what i need for a 95 tsi. Tell me if this is fact or bull crap

have finally got the tranny apart, and the center diff looks good. If anyone wants pics let me know. Does anyone have any other ideas? Dose anyone just think its the vc, Or rear end? I checked the xfure case and it seemed pretty good. I am going to take the middle section of the case off to see if theirs any shrapnel from something else later tonight or tomorrow. Any suggestions would be nice, thanks Cody.
