Help replacing valve cover and gasket. 4g63t.

Alright guys I got my new valve cover today and don't really want to pay to put it on. I have a valve cover gasket and the valve cover, i just need some direction on how to put the stuff on. Like stuff to remove, any lube for for the gasket, or any other stuff. I have found a step by step on how to replace a gasket which is all i need to replace everything, but i am not sure what the round thing is on the back left side of the valve cover is. Looks attached and i don't want to screw things up. O, and do i need a torque wrench so the valve cover wont crack when heated.

You just need a 10mm socket for the bolts. The new gasket and alittle rtv for the half moon gasket and around the edges of the new gasket by the cams. It's pretty simple bro, as for the round thing if you talking about the valve on the top left of valve cover in your pic. That's the Pcv valve and you should be able to see how it connects once you start taking your old valve cover off. The main thing to watch for is when reinstalling DO NOT over torque the bolts or you will crack the valve cover. I think the torque spec is 11-13 in.lb.

Here's a short little walkthrough using my valve cover. Some things might look a little different, but it's still the same steps to remove/install.

First, you need to remove the spark plug wires. Use some tape and a marker to number them from 1 to 4 with the wire closest to the timing belt being #1 and the wire farthest being #4.

Here is the valve cover on the engine. The red circles are the outer valve cover bolts. The yellow circles are the inner bolts. The blue circles are the two bolts that hold the timing cover on (I don't have a timing cover at the moment so use your imagination). Take them all completely out and store them is groups. Keep the inner bolts together, the outer bolts together, etc.

Here are the hoses for the engine ventilation system. The red arrow is the PCV hose and the yellow arrow is just a vent that should go to the intake pipe. Remove both of these lines from the valve cover. If either one is dry, cracked, or torn, replace it and use some kind of clamp to secure it once you install the new cover.

Your new gasket should have also come with a "half moon" gasket like the one below. This should get a very small amount of silicone on the bottom and then installed like so.

Once everything is removed, you can just lift the cover off. Install the new gasket completely dry (no silicone or grease) with the flat edge facing down towards the head of the engine. The circular gaskets go around the spark plug holes and also go in completely dry with the flat edge down. Reinstall all the hoses and bolts.

When tightening the bolts, do not tighten them more than "snug". Tighten the inner bolts first, then the outer bolts. But I can't stress enough to only tighten them until they begin to give resistance, then stop. The torque spec for these bolts is in inch/lbs not ft/lbs like most bolts. Too tight and they will crack the brittle aluminum.

Reinstall the spark plug wires in order. Remember #1 is closest to the timing belt and #4 is farthest. And that's it, your done!

Thats the cas (cam angle sensor) You don't need to touch that during the valve cover swap.

I will be doing this replacement within the week. I am very paranoid about over torquing/not torquing enough. any additional tips for how to tighten these bolts down to the proper torque?

Yes buy a torque wrench, or you can rent one from AutoZone, oreillys ect. Make sure to keep track (label) of everything to ensure that you get them back in the same place. It is easy and you will do just fine. Good luck

Thanks ervin00. im having trouble finding proper torque specs. some are in inch pounds.. some in foot pounds. ive read everything from 2-3 ft pounds (forum info) to 5 foot pounds (forum info) to 24-36 ft pounds (i believe manufacturer spec) to 200 inch pounds (forum info) and i dont know what information is accurate.

You don't need a torque wrench for the valve cover. Tighten them by hand until they're in all the way, then give them half a turn with a wrench/socket. Shoot me a message if you need a hand, I'm in Littleton.

use a 3/8 ratchet holding it at the head (not at the end of the handle with two hands cranking it down)

like said above snug them up then give then a half turn with ratchet.

Start in the center in a zig zag pattern working your way to the outer bolts.

this has got to be the the next simplest thin todo next to an oil change. don't over think it.

Personally I use a 1/4" with two fingers but i'm a bit paranoid about those. It has never leaked unless the holes were already stripped to begin with

Here is a Jafromobile video where he installs the valve cover seal and you get a good idea on how he does it.
The valve cover install starts at 17:46 with the half moon seal and goes from there.

I dissagree with the need to rtv over the bolt holes like that, it just makes for a mess next time you take it apart. never had issues with a leaking vc that was installed properly, rtv under the half moon though,
