Help me diagnose this sound...

Could of jumpped a t-belt tooth. Happened to me once but luckily I shut it down immediately after. Reset the belt and compression was normal.

May want to give this a try as may not need to pull the head after all :dsm:

Hard to tell specifically from the sound byte, but it didn't seem to be skipping or sputtering. Oil pressure ok?
Yeah I'd do a compression check and align the timing first...
But it does sound like you got a lifter or valve banging around.
I wouldn't drive it too much like that, if it falls out, you might have to do a whole motor...
Pull the plug wires and see if it goes away...
At least it might tell you what cylinder..

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll give the compression test a try. Oil pressure is normal. Unfortunately my brother drove the car for a couple miles with it tapping like that, hopefully everything is ok, I guess ill have to wait and see. I'll keep you guys posted, thanks again.

Depends on what it sounds like. To me, it seems like it could be a dry lifter or so. This happened to my old 90 gst when I put 20W-50 in it. Floated lifters twice before I figured out what it was. I would take it to someone who knows what a floated llfter sounds like and ask them. If that is the case, the head can stay on it.
